I am seeking more information about my great great grandmother, Elizabeth Goggins (also spelled Goggin, Gogin, Gogings, or Gogins).  She was born on Sep. 8, 1808 to John Goggins (b. 1782?) and Ann(ie) Ma(c)Guire Goggins (b. 1787?), and christened in the Protestant church in Drung on Sep. 19, 1808.

Elizabeth had siblings named Mary (b. 1807), Ann (b. 1810), Jane (b. 1813) and Margaret (b. 1818).  She married Richard Clark (b. about 1803) in the early 1830s, and had 4 children born in Ireland: Mary A. (Ann?), born about 1833, John (b. abt 1835), Richard J. Jr. (b. abt 1838), and David (b. abt 1841).

Elizabeth and Richard Clark immigrated to the United States about 1843, and she had 4 more children in New York City: Elizabeth (b. abt 1844), Margaret (b. 1846), Letitia (b. 1848), and Jane (b. 1852).

I have been unable to find any details on the date and place of her marriage to Richard, or his birth information.  I believe he was born either in Northern Ireland or one of the border counties.  Any information about Elizabeth or Richard's families would be greatly appreciated.  I think Elizabeth's mother, Ann Ma(c)Guire, was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (surname unknown) of Drung.

Thanks in advance for any information and assistance.

  • Dear Ronnie,

You have quite a lot of information including the details of her christening, do you have that certificate?  Do you know which church she was christened in?

It would be customary for the couple to get married in the church belonging to the bride, so I would try there.  That may give you the last residence of Richard.  I would also focus on David the youngest born in Ireland.

The civil registration starts here in 1845 for non Catholic marriages.

www.proni.gov.uk   would hold the bulk of the records for Northern ireland, if you think that Richard came from Ulster.

Would any more ancestors joined them in US depending on the dates if you search for them on the ellis Island site, or Castlegarden.org, you may find where they came from & their relatives names in Ireland.

You also have information on her siblings, again focus on the youngest.

Follow up on all birth, death & marraige certs both religious & civil where you can get them, somewhere along the line you may get more clues.

I looked at the 1901 Census at nationalarchives.ie & there were Goggins still there & lots of mcGuires.  In the local phone directory there were very few occurences of the Goggins name & only one in co Cavan.

I searched the titheapplotmentbooks@nationalachives.ie but Goggins did not turn up, but I urge you to search again with different spellings

I searched griffiths valuations & turned up this link

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…

    This may be your family.

Clarke name if very common & without a good lead it is difficult to sort them out I have several lines in my family & I have difficulty in sorting them out.

You can also look up the archived papers online "the Anglo Celt" would be the local paper, if there were any mention of the family you could also follow those up.

Best of luck with your searches.

  • Hi Carmel,

I obtained the christening information for Elizabeth and her sisters  from this page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~adrian/LDSBap01.htm&n…; (LDS Parish Register Printouts Drung Parish, Co. Cavan, Christenings 1735-1827).  That data was backed up by search results on ancestry.com.  I believe the church was the Drung Church of Ireland.  Richard and Elizabeth were members of the famous Trinity Episcopal Church in lower Manhattan after their arrival in the US.

My starting point was Elizabeth's death certificate, which I obtained from the New York City Municipal Archives.  It listed her parents as John and Annie Goggin.  I was also able to find an 1805 marriage record for John and Ann at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGFR-NVW

I haven't been able to find a definitive arrival record for the family in New York, although there was a David Clark who was the correct age, arriving with an Elizabeth Clark on the Nicholas Biddle on 23 August 1843.  Perhaps Richard and the other three children arrived earlier, but I haven't been able to find that data.  I have been very successful in tracking them from the 1850 US Federal Census onward.

There seems to be a Fyfe family tree on ancestry.com that concerns the same family, but I can't see all the details because I don't have a paid account, and I already used up my 2-week free trial.  I suspect the Fyfe family is descended from one of Elizabeth's sisters.

Thank you very much for the links.  I will give them a try.  I think my best bet for obtaining Richard's family information is to get his death certificate.  I do know his date of death, though his name does not show up on the New York City Death Index search site maintained by the Italian Geanealogical Group ( http://www.italiangen.org/NYCDeathSearch.asp ).  That's a very useful site for obtaining death certificate numbers, and it's where I found Elizabeth's certificate number.

Thanks again for your quick reply.
