Martin Connor/O'Connor married Mary Flahiff(Flahive) in 1854 in Castlegregory, Dingle peninsula. They had several children including Hanora, Mary(Maria), Cornelius, Michael, Catherine and Martin. The last two, Catherine and Martin emigrated to the US and one or more of the others may have emigrated as well...at least one of the others emigrated to New Zealand according to family lore.

I can find no trace of any of the family in the 1901 census so I've surmised that they either emigrated or died...it's most probable that the elder Martin and his wife Mary remained in Ireland and died there.

If anyone has any information on any of these family members I'd appreciate it.

Ed O'Connor

PS, I believe that the parents of Mary Flahive were John Flahive and Johanna O'Donnell.

  • Hi Trish,

I only have family lore as an indication that part of the family emigrated to New Zealand....I'm thinking that either Michael O'Connor or Cornelius O'Connor may have been the ones who emigrated..

Martin, the younger lived in western Massachusetts in the same area as his sister catherine, my great grandmother.

  • Hi, excited to be here! Hoping to get some help.  Trying to find more information on James Connor born 1858,  Parents of James, might be Cornelius Connor and Ann Ferris married in 1844, Kerry. They had 8 children.  James Connor immigrated to USA married Mary Leahy in Kerry in 1890. They had 4 children, one Edward, James, Agnus, Thomas. Edward is possibly my great grandfather. Edward F Connor born 1897. Any help confirming whether or not I am on the right track would be great! Changes in spelling, and mix up with dates here on the US Census, I am not sure if I am tracing this right, or if I am only getting close enough.  I think that I did find that Cornelius Connor was born 1813, his father was James Connor , mother Catherine Sweeney, married in Killarny.  Thanks so much for reading.

Grateful for my Irish heritage, Dawn

  • Dear Ed and Dawn I haven't forgotten you and have passed on your requests to our local very shy historian. It can take a little time to hear back from him. He doesn't like computers! So bear with me and I'll get back to you as soon as.

  • Dear Ed and Dawn

I have you come across this list of people liable to pay tithes. I haven't had time to check it out yet but it might be useful to you.

    http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlker/tithecork.html

I am following a Castlegregory lead for you Ed.

Sadly Dawn it looks like your people are not from Castlegregory. Have you posted on the Killarney board to see if someonelse is tracing the Killarney O' Connors?

    Do keep in touch.

  • Hello Martine,

Ironically, the fellow who posted the tithes information is a good friend of mine....he lives now in Fermoy Cork but his roots are on the Dingle peninsula....my wife Marge and I met Brendan on our first trip to Ireland back in 2003.

I made Brendan's acquaintance and that of Eibhlin Counihan also a Dingle peninsula researcher before the explosion of online material on the net...both Brendan and Eibhlin were great helps and are friends of ours to this day..

Anything you can possibly find on this o'Connor family would be helpful.

I also have Crean and Rohan families from the area around Castlegregory and I'll be updating a post on them soon.

  • Dear Ed, I finally made contact with my local historian only to find after all that I was 'barking up the wrong tree'

    Oh fiddlesticks!

  • Ed,

I dont know if this will help you or not but here it is, I did not do this research, it was sent to me:

In the Castlegregory Marriage Registary we see an Edward Connor from Stradbally marrying Johanna Flahiv on 23 Feb 1841.

Two children are recorded to them:

    Ellen --- 13 Feb 1842

Mary --- 20 Nov 1844 (mother's name given as Johanna Flaherty --- the surname is a mistake I feel)

    Best of luck!

    mary
