My great grandmother Elizabeth (Lizzie) Scanlan left Ballymacelligott with her two sisters Ellen and Mary in 1879 to travel to New Zealand.
I know very little about her family in Ireland and would be interested to find out more.

Hi Mary,
Thank you for your message. There are a few sources available that may help you.
You could try looking for information on the Scanlon?s in church records. Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which may be useful however is the Irish TImes where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Ballymacelligott follow this link:
For information on what Church of Ireland records are available check:
http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
One website that will be very useful to you is Irish Genealogy website. Here they have begun a project to upload church records to their website free of charge. The project is ongoing so only a few counties have been covered so far, fortunately Kerry is one of them. You can search these records here:
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so you may be able to find records relating to births, marriages, deaths in the family here. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here si their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
You could also check for record of the family in the land acts pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
To see if there were any family still in the area after the sisters left you can check the 1901/1911 census records here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/kerry/index.html
Family Search: www.familysearch.org
Alternatively, you could try contacting the Local Studies Department of Kerry Co. Library for further assistance. Here is their webpage:
I hope that some of these links are helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
