My  grandparents came from, the village of Laragh, co. Monaghan. My uncle Hugh farmed there until, his death in the 1980s.  Family lore has it that my great grandfather, Peter?  McCluskey donated the land on which the  church of St. Peter (Church of Ireland) was built in 1891.

i would be most grateful for any information, including, the name of the parish that contains Laragh.

i last visited in 1989 and walked up the hill,to the farm where I'd spent many happy summers as a child. The old farmhouse remained but Hugh had built a bungalow nearby a few years before his death.

thank you, Rennie

  • There are three Laragh townlands in Co. Monaghan but I believe the Laragh you are looking for is in Agnamullen parish.

  • Rennie,

Just saw this email in a search I was doing?
Was your uncle known as Hughie Curley and lived in a bungalow overlooking the church? It sound as if it is, I live up the road. It is the Aughnamullen parish, check out Laragh Heritage facebook page as they have restored the church and official opening of it takes place in a week
