I have very basic info on my Irish gg grandparents. Im hoping I can find some help here to guide me in my search for more info.

Michael and Catherine Meehan (Coughlan) were married in Clare in 1847.

Michael was born in 1825, Catherine in 1823.

They immigrated to Australia in 1853 abord the Pekin with no children apparently

This is all I know about their ife in Ireland and would appreciate any clues to help me find out some more info.

  • Hello:

i will take a look through our parish register here in Tulla to see if the above matches up with anything in there.  Do you happen to have either one of their parents' names?  If not, it's no problem.

i will make contact with you next week.

    kind regards,

    Jane

  • Thankyou Jane,

The only other info I have is Catherines parents are David Coughlan and Margaret (Walsh).

    Much appreciated...and good luck.

    Regards

  • Hi Julie,

There are four civil parishes Clare Co. in 1855 where both Meehan and Coughlan households are found.

    - Clooney (Corcomroe) (1 Coughlan & 2 Meehan households)

    - Drumcliff (2 Coughlan & 6 Meehan households)

    - Kiluran (1 Coughlan & 1 Meehan household)

    - Kilrush (3 Coughland & 2 Meehan households)

    Take care,

    James McNamara

  • Hi Julie:

i did some quick research for you in Tulla and while both family names are listed in the baptismal register, I don't find anything to match up with your query.  However, I agree with Jim above, that Killuran might be the next avenue to pursue.

If you like, I can make further enquiries and see what I can come up with.

    kind regards,

  • Thankyou Jim and Jane,

I appreciate your help. I have more now in 2 days than I have had in 20 years!

I remembered something when I read the word Clooney...it has been mentioned in my Grandmothers notes that they came from 'Cloones', and this made no sense in my research as I couldnt find any such place. But given that handwritten info can sometimes be very sketchy...and gained by oral family histories...I quickly realised that the real name could be hidden there somewhere.

Yes Jane...if it isnt any trouble I would appreciate anything else you can find. Any pieces of the puzzle are valuable finds.

    Regards

    Julie
