My relatives in Ireland have indicated that James McCarthy (b. Laharn/Killorglin in the 1820's) switched properties with a cousin from Gleesk outside Sneem around the time of the Great Famine (pre 1845) and never returned. While I have extensive data from Irish Genealogy, National Census and Ancestry.com about many family branches, I am still missing info on who his wife was and when/where they married. One intriguing listing shows a marriage between James and a Catherine McCarthy in the 1840's which may fit the profile.....but I am not sure. Any and all help would be sincerely appreciated. Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking up james in the two land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century to see if you can confirm this switch? There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
With regards to his marriage record, does it list the couple?s fathers? names? If it does, perhaps you could try searching for their birth records so that you could cross reference the name?
Catholic records for the parish of Killorglin begin as early as 1798 so if they were born there you should be able to find it:
you could also try contacting the Local Studies Department of Kerry County Library to see if they can offer any assistance. Here is their webpage: http://www.kerrylibrary.ie/local.asp
I hope these suggestions are helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
