I am the granddaughter to John F Barrett and Catherine Hyland, who were married 17 Nov 1908 in New York (on Long Island).  Catherine's parents were John Hyland and Johanna Cotter.  I believe all of their children emigrated to the USA in the late 1890's to early 1900's.  I am trying to find her elder sister Mary Hyland, who supposedly married a McNamara either in Caher, or maybe New York.  She's a hard lass to find; I believe she lived in NY or maybe Massachuesetts, but have no idea how to verify any if one match is indeed my relative.  I am hoping one of her relatives still lives in the area and is willing to share information with me.  My grandfather, John F Barrett, was born in Knocknaboha in 1869. His elder brother Michael and elder sister Johanna stayed in Tipperary and married into the O'Brien and Ryan families.  Two Barrett sisters from these Tipperary Barretts started the Barrett Smokeshop in Clonmel, but it closed when Bridie (?) passed.

  • Thank you, Tom, for your help.  I have found two more children to Michael and Catherine Barrett that you do not have: Margaret Barrett born 29 Jun 1922 and John Barrett born 29 Feb 1924.  It is my understanding that Margaret Barrett moved to England, as my Aunt Eileen Barrett Zacharon would write to her, according to my cousin Eugene Sullivan.  I believe she is still in England.  I am not sure about the whereabouts of John, or if he is still alive.

    All this information will be of great interest to my family that I will see in June for the wedding of my neice. 

    I am now very eager to come back to Ireland to do more research and take photos of all the locations where the family lived/worked, etc.

  • I have recently discovered that the Hyland's had another daughter.  Her name was Anne Hyland and was born 9 Jul 1869 in Ballymacadam.  The eldest sister was Mary Anne who was born 22 May 1867.  Anne is the second child and daughter born to parents John Hyland and Johanna Cotter.  I know Mary emigrated to NY in the late 1880's to early 1890's, but am not sure about Anne Hyland.  Any information on the whereabouts of Anne Hyland is greatly appreciated.
