hello! My ggg grandparents were James Kennedy and Hannah Hogan.
They married in Illinois, USA in 1856 and their marriage record indicates they were both born in Tipperary, Ireland. No parish or town is listed. They may have known each other in Ireland, or their families may have emigrated together, but this is uncertain. They ended up in Sangamon County, IL.
per the 1900 US census, Hannah was born in 1836 and emigrated to the US in 1847. James had already passed away by 1900, so this information is unavailable for him.
Hannah's mother had 12 children in total, 10 of whom were still living in 1900.
They had a daughter, Jennie (sometimes 'Jane'), who was my gggrandmother. She was born in 1867/8.
Any information would be appreciated!

Hi - I have both KENNEDY and HOGAN in my tree and they were from Terryglass parish in north Tipperary. A quick search on rootsireland threw up one hit for Hannah - birth 1833, parents John HOGAN and Margaret. A similar search for James gave a birth year of 1830, with parents John KENNEDY and Nancy. If you can give more information - eg you say Hannah's mother had 12 children, so you may have her name and names of children, I will do a more detailed search for you.

oh my gosh this is so exciting! That could be them!
I think I messed up.... it's Hannah who was the mother of 12 children, per the 1900 US census.
That same census shows that she arrived to the US in 1847.
The only thing that doesn't match is her birth year.... it is stated as 1836 per the census.
I tried attaching the document but it was too large.
I wonder how certain some of the birth years really are....

It is a long shot that these are the same people. My best suggestion is that you try to trace the passenger list for their arrival in the US, that way you will know the exact names of the people you are trying to trace. I have a subscription to Ancestry, but it doesn't include the US, so I can't look at the arrivals there unfortunately. Maybe our friendly experts here on IrelandXO could make more informed suggestions? When you have more information I'll have a look at my people to see if there is a link

Thank you June!
I've tried to trace their arrival but to no avail. Unfortunately there were just so many ships from Ireland to the US in 1847, they haven't all been transcribed onto the internet yet! I use Ancestry too (US version).
I've got dead ends in counties Tyrone (Armstrong, Cook) and Roscommon (Kinney, Quinn) as well. All came to the US during the famine years.
I'm making my first trip to Ireland this July, so I am going to keep digging around to see if I come up with something. I would love to just find parish information!
wish me luck...
