Daniel McLaughlin born ca1850 in Cushendall - his parents (acc.marriage cert in Queensland, Australia) - John McLaughlin and Rose McNaughton. Daniel migrated to Queensland in mid-1870s and married Margaret O'Connor in 1878/9. We have been unable to locate any records in Antrim for him or his family. He was at first, a miner in Ipswich, Queensland, which might indicate his occupation in Antrim? Any help at all appreciated to break down this brick wall.

Hi Donald,
Have you tried looking at church records from Layd parish? Catholic records for the area begin as early as 1837 so if this is where Daniel was born you should be able to find his birth record here, and perhaps even his parents marriage records. The Irish Times website shows what records are available and where there are copies:
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

I did a search for John McLoughlin, Layd parish on Griffith?s Valuation. This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-1864, here are the results that came back:
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

You could also try contacting the Ulster Historical Foundation for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email address: enquiry@uhf.org.uk
I hope some of this is helpful and new to you. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
