Trying to trace my anscestors back to Ireland. My great great grandmother was an Irish Famine orphan sent from Dingle, Kerry on the Thomas Arbuthnot which arrived in Australia at Sydney in 1850. She was 17 and arrived alone. She could not write or read and was roman catholic. Her father's name was Daniel Kennedy and her mother was Gobnet (judith) keller who were married in Annascaul in 1832, Mary was also baptised in Annascaul in 1833. I am trying to find where Daniel or Gobnet came from and who their parents might have been but seem to be hitting a brick wall for information that goes that far back. Any ideas where I should be looking?
Sharyn.

Hi Sharyn,
Thank you very much for your message.
You will probably have to look in church records for information on Daniel and Gobnet?s parents. Did you know that church records from Co. Kerry have all been uploaded free of charge to http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ You should be able to fin dosme records pertaining to the family here. The start date of these records really depend on the parish as every parish have different start dates as civil registration was not official until 1864. A useful websites is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. Here is a map of Kerry with the Catholic parishes:
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/kerryrc.htm
Even if you cannot find their birth records it may be useful to ttry and find their marriage record as sometimes the couple?s fathers? names were recorded.
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Familysearch: www.familysearch.org
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/kerry/index.html
I hope this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Dear Sharyn,
is this the link you have?
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/5849760024006
Some parishes are willing to search deeper than others. It is worth writing to
Fr. John Buckley, P.P The Presbytery Annascaul, Co. Kerry. Tel: (066) 9157103 . Email: annascaul@dioceseofkerry.ie
to see if they might be able to help you.

Hi Sharyn
Just come across your query (& the responses). It seems we have common ancestors. My GG Grandmother was Mary Kennedy, an Irish Fanine Orphan who arrived in Sydney on the Thomas Arbuthnot on 3 February 1850. She eventually married Willian Samuels at Drayton Parsonage & they had twelve children. One of those, Mary (Polly) Samuels, was my G Grandmother. Would love to discuss further but not sure how to contact you. Not even sure I'm posting this in the right place.
Cheers

Hi Ian,
William was my great, great grandfather. My great grandfather was his son James who would have been Mary's brother. James married Martha Davidson, they stayed in the area for years and raised their children(5 of them). My grandfather was William Robert Samuels and my grandmother was Beatrice Palmer, they had 9 children of which my father named James was number six. I still live in Toowoomba. It was great to hear from somebody who shares the same ancestory. I have been trying to piece together bits and pieces but didn't realise the family was so large. My email address should show up somewhere on this page, I think. I am kind of new to the internet thing but found this site the most helpful yet
Love to hear from you, Sharyn..

Hello Martine
Yes we are definitely related. Add another cousin to the list. The GG Grandmother remains a mystery, although Sharyn has some interesting thoughts.
Tks for your interest

Hello Martine,
Ian and I are definately related, so good to hear from a distant cousin. We are keeping in touch and sharing information and getting closer to solving the mystery. I have found out that Mary Kennedy married William Samuels in Drayton Qld Australia and they raised a family of TWELVE children here. So we have many long lost cousins to find.
Thanks again for all the help you have given- we'll keep looking,
Sharyn.

Dear Ian and Sharyn, I found the online record for the marriage of Daniel and Gobnait. In my experience, parents names and townland name will almost always exist on the paper record. Many transcriptions were done in haste and details were ommitted. You can write or email, it may take some time as mostly these queries are dealt with by volunteers. Do ask for all the information on the record! If you get the name of the townland, maps are available online or you can get back to me. Let me know how you get on. Fingers crossed for you. Martine

Hi Martine (& Sharyn)
I have looked on Griffith's Valuation for Daniel Kennedy, Kerry. There were 15 returns, of these, two were from near Annascaul. One is for a house office & land & the other is for land. I'm assuming both of these Daniel's are the same person. County - Kerry, Barony - Corkaguiny, Union - Dingle, Parish - Ballynacourty, Townland - Coumduff. I'm not sure now where this leaves me. Perhaps the next step is to write/email the PP as you have suggested to see if his records for Daniel & Gobnait (& Mary birth) show the same locations. If they do, then that's another step foreward but it still won't definitely prove that they are actually the family we are looking for. What do you think ? Thanks again. Ian.

Ian and Martine,
I have sent away an email to Father Buckley to see if their is any further information available. Fingers crossed and just waiting for a reply. I asked about Mary's baptism and her parents marriage in Annascaul.

Good move Sharyn. I look foreward to seeing what the results might be. If we could somehow tie this Mary to the workhouse & the Thomas Arbuthnot, then I would be a happy chappie !!!

Thanks Martine. I was aware of these excellent maps & find them very useful. There's also an excellent map there of the Ballynacourty Parish which includes Counduff.
About 12 mths ago, I emailed Michael Lynch, the Kerry Library Archivist, seeking info on weather or not there was a record of any of the inmates in the Dingle workhouse. Michael replied that "any reference to these would have been carried in the Inmate Admissions Registers, but unfortunately none of those appeared to have survived for the Kerry Union areas". If Mary (& her father) were in the Dingle workhouse then perhaps that record might have assisted in pinpointing her birth place. Would you be able to shed some light on what other records might be available & where I might look to find orphan girl allocations to the Thomas Arbuthnot. Thanks again.

Hi Ian, I suggest you join the Ireland Reaching Out Earl Grey Orphans page on FaceBook. Anne Marie there has some special skills in this area. She may be able to help you more than I can.
But please continue to let us know how you are getting on.

Hi Ian and Martine, My computer has crashed due to a virus-I am borrowing one from a friend today. I had a reply from Father Buckley but unfortunately there is no more information in the paper records than what we already have.
