Hanorah Capeless is my great great grandmother.  She was born in County Tipperary in about 1828.  She came to America in 1847 and shortly afterwards located at Burlington, Vermont.  In 1848 she married Patrick Skahen who was also from County Tipperary.  They moved west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and settled in Rantoul, Calumet County, Wisconsin in about 1853.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

  • Capeless / capliss/ cappliss/ caplice are some of the name variants in Tipperary. Name concentration  in Rearcross, Newport on the LIMERICK in North Tipp and Ballyporeen/Cahir South Tipperary. Their births, marriage ,deaths would have been registered in Nenagh town since 1864. My own Capliss gr,gr grandmother  came from Baurnadomeeney, Rearcross where an ancient burial site exists. My e mail is foxseamus@gmail.com.

  • Thank you Jack for the information.  You have given me some starting points for beginning my Tipperary search.  I have to say, Nenagh has been coming up in a variety of places so I think I'll start there.  I tried entering Capeless as the surname, Ireland as the country, and Tipperary as the residence but didn't get any results on FamilySearch.  I'll keep trying...

    Thanks again for your help.

  • Thank you very much for listing the variant spellings of Capeless.  By trying them I realized that programs like Ancestry, FamilySearch, etc. sometimes give different results even if the spelling matches phonetically.  Caplice allowed me to find the marriage of Hanora to Patrick Skahen in Burlington, VT.  Her name was listed as Keplice his as Skeaghan.  Thank you also for helping me to narrow down the places in which to begin my search in Tipperary. I'm hoping to post some positive results soon.  Maybe we are related!!!

  • I believe a Caplice married a sister of my maternal ancestor, Catherine White married Patrick Caplice, Glencunna, Tipperary. I also have a Bridget Keaples on a baptism record for my White/Barry ancestor in Kilcarroon which lies between Ballyporeen and Clogheen. There are Caplice's from this same area connected to my paternal O'Brien's.  they were from Clogheen. I have an obit for a Barry cousin who died in Worcester, MA and David Caplis was a pallbearer, he was from CT I believe. Lastly if you google Caplice genealogy Tipperary you will see a site that Brian Hickey created, he is a Caplice descendant. Brian's family was from the Clogheen, Ballyporeen area, he has a lot of information. His site is from 2000, I corresponded with him back in 2005, no new data has been added since, I'm not sure if his email is still valid. Good luck

  • Thank you very much for all the information you sent.  I found the Brian Hickey site very informative.  I wish I could connect with your Caplice relatives but haven't been able to find any information about siblings for or parents of Honora Capeless.  I'll let you know if I find anything.

    Sincerely,

    Patty
