My name is John Spillane. I am going to be in Dinkle arriving 23rd of June and leaving the 26th of June. I have done a considerable amount of research with regards to my grandparents and here is what I know. My grandfather Thomas Spillane was born the 14 of December 1878 to James Spillane and Ellen (Deen) Spillane (birth registration # 10588254). They lived on Fahamore. I believe they lived at # 16 (1901 census) and then at # 25 (1911 census). My great grandmother was a national teacher and my great grandfather was a carpenter. My grandfather came to America around 1899 and I believe he was the only one to do so. If I have the correct 1901 family census it lists his siblings as Norah (possibly Honora age 20 - I believe born 14th May 1880), Mary (age 19 - I believe born 4th of February 1882), Ellie (possibly Ellen age 17 - I believe born 24th September 1883), Maurice (age 11 - I believe born 30th April 1889). I also believe there was a son John born 13th June 1886 who I suspect died as a child.

My grandmother Sarah Whelan was born 1st June 1877 to George Whelan and Ellen (Lynch) Whelan (birth registration # 11686193). They, I believe, live on Main Street in Dinkle and my great grandfather's profession is listed as Publican. If I found the correct 1901 census it listed there address as 21 In The Square (Tralee Urban, Kerry). I recall my family always saying my granmother came from Tralee.

I would like to find the parish or parishes my grandparents were from and see if I can find more out about their parents an siblings. I would also like to find the cemetaries were my ancestors are buried.

I very much appreciate any help you may be able to give me.

Best regards,

John (Spillane)

  • Hi John

Just to let you know I have forwarded your genealogy messge of one of our volunteers in Kerry. I have also sent your query to someone that shares your surname in Kerry....... there might be a connection!!     My own ancestors came from Dingle and it is a lovely area, as is Tralee.

I hope you have a wonderful trip there in June and let us know how you get on.

    Best of luck

John there are Deane (which is how it is spelt now in Castlegregory/Dingle area, they have holiday cottages there, but of course you would have to check with them

My ancestors may come from another line of the same family tree, My 2 x G Grandfather Patrick O'Connor married Elizabeth Deen in 1846 and some of their children came to New Zealand,  I also have Patrick's brothers & sisters went to USA (have just found out about them, good luck and enjoy your journey back to Kerry, I have made contact with some of our family in Ireland but have yet to make the journey

    Good Luck

  • Hi Maureen,

Thanks you for your message. You are absolutely correct. The people you mention are my relatives. I am hoping to obtain more information whilst in Ireland. Maybe we are related.

    Thanks,

  • Hi John

I think your family might be related to the Spillane family that owns Spillanes bar in Fahamore on the Maharees peninsula (a few miles from Castlegregory). I was there myself last week on holiday and trying to trace my family (Kennedy) who lived in Fahamore at the time (house no 18 in 1901 Fahamore census). I spoke to Mrs Spillane who told me that   Fahamore residents were part of the parish of Stradbally back then and were buried in Stradbally cemetary.

Best of luck with your search.
