I am trying to trace my great grandfather's family which came from the Tuamgraney area in East Clare. His name was:
Michael Kenny/Canny
B. 1836 Arrived in Victoria on the Morning Star in 1861
His mother was Jane Brady b.1799 came out to Australia with the rest of the family in 1866 on the Shalimar. It would seem a son Patrick came out even earlier.
It is said that Jane Brady was the daughter of of a William Brady from Ballyvannon.
She married James Canny / Kenny possibly in 1833. It is said he came from a place called Crealtha and was a carpenter. He died some time before the family migrated
In Australia Kenny was used but I am told in Ireland it is CANNY. There was apparently some connection between this family and an Edward Brady and Hannah Canny who also migrated to Australia. This Hannah Canny was daughter of a Timothy Canny of Feakle. Edward Brady was born in 1830 at Kielty.
Basically I would love to know where James Canny came from in the area and when he was born, married and died. Also who his parents were. Also who Jane Brady's parents were and where she came from.

From the Griffiths Valuation head of household data of 1855, it looks like James Canny lived in Callahy townland in Tomgraney civil parish. There were also Bradys in this parish including a James Brady in Callahy.

I would recommend that you check out the Clare library site for more research.

Thanks Roger. I have come across that myself but do you know of Crealtha? I will follow up what you recommend up. There are other James Canny in the area at that time so I am trying to establish connections.

I can only find one reference to Crealtha on the Internet and that is on the Connors genealogy site. There is a posting by a Michael Naismith looking for Cannys in Crealtha. Maybe that is your posting?

You may also want to look at the 1826 Tithe Applotment listing for Clare on the National Archives site. There are six Cannys listed in Tomgraney parish including a Patrick Canny in Callaghy townland.

A message for Michael Naismith.
I too am descended from James Canny/Kenny and Jane Brady, through their daughter Margaret (born around 1843), who married John Minogue. I am trying to track down what I can about the Kennys in Victoria. Thank you for putting your query here, and thank you to Roger who answered it. Any information is like gold!
