Great-Grand-Father, John Woods Flanagan

"Native of Ennistymon" is inscribed on my Great-grand-father's tombstone in Waverly cemetery in Sydney, Australia.  His name was JOHN WOODS FLANAGAN. ("JWF")

BIRTH: c1835 (64yrs at death in 1899, informant his son)

            or c1842 (29yrs at birth of 1st child, he himself the informant).

            or c1846 (age at marriage in July 1870, given on death cert. as 24yrs)

            no age details on his marriage certificate ("above 21 years")

PARENTS: Father John Flanagan, Farmer, Mother Bridget Woods (from sister's marriage cert.)

                 Father John Flanagan, Mother Bridget Woods (his (JWF's) death cert.)

                 (no information re parents on his Marriage Certificat)

SIBLING:  Margaret. born c.1841 (28yrs at marriage in 1869, and 33yrs at death in 1874)

EMIGRATION: Unable to locate a John Flanagan on any Ship's list of Assisted Migrants into  Australia whose details in the Immigration Board Lists have matching parents (John and Bridget).

However, there is a record of a Margaret Flannagan aged 23 arriving on the "Lady Milton" in July 1862. She was a Servant, Roman Catholic, could neither read nor write, and came from Ennistymon. Her birth 1838/39, "my" Margaret's birth 1840/41.However, the Board List which would confirm her identity by giving her parents' names, is not in the archives.  There is no John Flanagan / Flannagan listed on the ship.

LOCAL RECORDS: Earliest records found are advertisements in local newspapers for his Business, "Jones and Flanagan", Commission Agents, from April 1869 (after which there are continuous references to him until his death), his appearance as Witness at his sister's marriage in July 1869, and his marriage in July 1870 to Elizabeth Maloney, an Australian born daughter of Irish Immigrants Patrick and Margaret (O'Connor) Maloney.

I would very much like to know something of my Irish Ancestry.  I have found that the Females in my history give their children lots of stories about their families, the Males are much more reticent!
