I am trying to find out who were the parents of my great grandfather Patrick Joseph Kenna.  His father was named Michael and was a farmer.  His mother was Mary and her surname was also Kenna.  He had 2 brothers John George (died 1896) and Daniel Arthur (died 1901).  Patrick died of arsenic poisoning in 1916, his brothers of heart disease.  All died in Sydney, Australia.

I have been able to link these men to other Kenna families (Uncles Patrick, Daniel and Richard) in Australia and first cousins to Eliza and Minnie Cox, daughters of Margaret McKenna and her husband Cox (I think first name Michael).

I have not been able to establish if it is their father Michael or their mother Mary who is the brother or sister of Margaret McKenna and the uncles listed above.

I believe that all came from Ballylaghnan and the parents of Richard, Margaret, Daniel, Patrick and others were Patrick McKenna and Katherine Cox.

Any help would be appreciated

I can't tell if you used the Clare Library site. If you have not, the site may be useful to your research.I also looked at the 1826 Tithe Applotment records for Ogonnelloe parish http://titheapplotment.nationalarchives.ie (The records are also on the Clare Library site). The townland is spelled Ballyloughlane in the Tithe records. In any event, I found a Thomas Kinna and a Lot Kinna in the Tithe data for Ballyloughlane (Ballylaghlan). Not sure how they relate to your great-grandfather Patrick.

  • Hi I am researching my family line of Kenna and I know they came from Ogonelloe to Scotland after 1842. I have their line after they came to Scotland but know little else.

My line is descended from cornelius kenna and Hannah Murray. They had at least one child. In Ireland before coming to Scotland and he was named Patrick.

If anyone can help me with this I would be most grateful

    many thanks

There was a Pat Kenna baptised in Ogonnelloe, Co Clare on 22nd February 1847  and his parents were Corny Kenna and Honor Murry.  There is only one child listed to these parents. I do not have details of the townsland they were from or the sponsors.

  • Dear Catherine,

This corresponds mostly to the information which was provided to me by Jane some months ago except that the baptismal date for Pat (Patrick ) was 5th Apr, 1853, not 11th feb, 1853, which you have identified.

It is compelling for me to conclude that this is the family for whom I was looking because of the elder brother Daniel and the younger brother John .  I know them as Daniel Arthur and John George from their death certificates here in NSW Australia.  Is there any way of knowing what the second names were of the brothers you have listed?

Also, do you have any information about when, where and how the parents Michael and Mary died and when and how the brothers came to Australia?

    The search continues.

    All the best,

    John Maclurcan

  • Hi John (Mac Lurcan)

I'm sue I'm going to confuse things a bit, as there are probably several Kenna/McKenna families from Ogonnelloe parish in County Clare.  I'm happy to share what I have, though.  My 3X great grandfather was Lot Kenna, who was married to Mary Maguire.  I know that Lot died at 102, but I'm not sure when he was born.  They had 8 children together.  Here are their names and birthdates:

    Name                                      Date                              Townland                                Baptism Sponsors
Ellen                                        4/8/1832                        Ballybrohan                            Thomas Tuohy, Bridget Burke
    Mary                                        5/4/1834                              "                                        Dan Kenna, Ellen O'Brien
Honora                                    31/3/1836                            "                                        Tom Kenna, Eliza Kenna
Bridget                                     22/6/1838                            "                                        Dan Kenna, Sarah Maguire
Judith                                      15/4/1841                             "                                        Michael Kenna, Judith Keefe
Tom                                         15/10/1843                           "                                        Thomas Maguire, Mrs. Kenna
Margaret                                 26/6/1848                             "                                         Richard Power, Ellen Mulcahy
Patrick                                     26/3/1854                            "                                          Michael Kenna, Judith Crotty

Not sure any f this helps, but perhaps you (or someone else) will recognize a name or date that will help other pieces of the puzzle fall into place.  Good luck with your search.

    Best Regards,
Sue Kenney  (Great grandaughter of Maggie McKenna and John Cleary)

  • My Great Grandparents were Michael McKenna (b 1821) and Anne St Laurence (b 1828). Michael’s father was Thomas Kenna, shown as a landholder in the Tithe Applotment Book of 1827 and the Land Valuation of 1855 (see Clare Heritage Centre Report). The records in Ireland do not tell us when Michael married Anne. He was alive at the census in April 1901, living with eldest son Thomas in Ballyloughnane, and his age was given as 79, giving a birth year of 1822. Michael and Anne are buried in the hillside cemetery above the town overlooking Lough Derg.

MICHAEL AND ANNE McKENNA re buried in the Hill Cemetery which has grand views of Lough Derg. The gravestone reads:

    In affectionate remembrance
Of Michael Mc Kenna of Ballyloughnane
Who died July 20 1909 aged 88 years
And his beloved wife Anne McKenna who died
    Feb 26 1911 aged 83 years
And their granddaughter Mary Anne McKenna 1
Who died March 24th 1912 aged 18 years
    Thomas McKenna who died April 4 1913 aged 62 2 (?83) years
And his son Michael who died May 4th 1914 aged 18 years 3
Winifred Mary McKenna died 1949 4

    Notes:
    1. Mary Anne McKenna was the daughter of Thomas McKenna, baptised 31 March 1893
    2. Thomas was the eldest son of Michael and Anne, baptised 10 December 1848
    3. Michael was the son of Thomas, baptised 18 September 1896
    4. Winifred Mary could have been the wife of Thomas although she would have been a great age in 1949, or his daughter, baptised 3 June 1894

Thomas McKenna, as the eldest son, inherited the family farm from Michael, and John (Christy) McKenna was still living on the farm in 1986. Three of the St Laurence family were also living next door (as recorded in the 1986 election register).. The two story cottage they lived in and raised their ten children was still standing in 1997. In the 1901 Census the home is described as “having stone walls, a slate roof, 5 windows to the front and 7 rooms”. The timber framing and ceilings are very well done. The farm passed out of the family’s hands in 1997 and we attended the farewell party for Maura (nee McKenna) and John Geoghegan at the Pipers hotel just down the road from the farm. There we met Maura’s sisters Una McInerney (nee McKenna) and Phyllis Byrne (nee McKenna).

I have done little research on the St Laurence family. The name St. Laurence has existed in County Dublin since the twelfth century. The name Lawrence was brought to Ireland by settlers from England who arrived into the Province of Ulster during the seventeenth century. The use of St Lawrence in the records is likely to be an anglicized version. Next door to the McKenna farm is a farm with the name of St Laurence on the mail box and a St Laurence family was still living on the farm next to the McKenna farm in Ballyloughnane in 1994 when my wife Karin McKenna saw the property on her visit in 1994. No one was home when we were in the area in 1997.

    Notes:
    1.    Thomas had a nickname “The Sire” to distinguish him from another Thomas McKenna who had married a sister of Thomas’ wife. This other Thomas was nicknamed “Butt”. Information from Bryan Kenna’s research (see family details below)
    2.    Michael came out to NZ, probably at the same time as Edward and James. He lived at Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island. As far as is known he never married and he died in Auckland on 6 June 1920 and is buried in Auckland Cemetery. (Information from Michael McKenna, Hamilton, NZ).
    3.    It is very likely the first Ellen died at a young age given another child was called Ellen.. It was customary to name the another child of the same gender after the one who had died.
    4.    Mary married a Matthew O’Brien at Ogonnelloe on 17 February, 1885. Nothing further is known, although a search by the Clare Heritage Centre would probably provide some information.
    5.    Denis married a Mary Ann Littleton and they had five children. One child, May Ann, born 18 May, 1888, in Tulla, Co Clare became Mother Lelia of the Ennis Sisters of Mercy. Information from Denis McKenna of Patea, NZ.
    6.    Ann may have been the sister of Edward who emigrated to Australia to live. My Aunt Kath Owen stayed with Aunt Nano in Sydney for twelve months before getting homesick and returning to NZ.
    7.    Timothy married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sammon. They had at least one child, William, who was the father of Declan McKenna of Windsor, England, and Veronica Bleach of Mountshannon, Co Clare. Further information is expected from Veronica and Declan (see family details). Timothy and Lizzie are buried in the William Sammon plot at the Old Moynoe Cemetary, Scariff. Sammon, William, May 15, 1910, 75  In affectionate remembrance of William Sammon of Kilrateera who died May 15th 1910 aged 75 years and his wife Catherine who died Feby 14th 1890 aged 52 years. And his sons Michael, John & Patrick. And his daughter Mrs Bridget O'Dea alias Sammon. Also Mrs Elizabeth McKenna, died 25th Dec 1944. Timothy McKenna, died 31st July 1949 aged 80 years. Sweet Jesus give them eternal rest. Erected by his daughter Mrs Elizabeth McKenna Kilraterra
