  • Hi

Thank you for your message. Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information.

Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at ). www.failteromhat.com

  • Hi, I have lived in Blackwater all my life so i have a fair knowledge of families in the area. Going back, I can think of only two families called Doran. Have you ever heard of a blacksmith among your ancesters?

One family of Doran had a forge up until the 1950s. Dempsey is a more plentiful name here so I would need more information. Maybe some of your relations have contacted you already but I will keep the names and dates in mind when I am going through any material I have. Good luck with your research, Rita

    Hi,

I am responding to the old post above about the Dorans and Dempseys. My grandfather was Michael Ormond of Blackwater who was a grandson to Laurence, born in 1810 and Eleanor Dempsey, born in 1815. Laurence and Eleanor were married in Oct. 8, 1929.   Eleanor's parents were Thomas Dempsey and Mary Hobby.

Michael's father was David Ormond and his mother was Elizabeth "Bessie" Doran.  She was a sister of Andrew.  She was born about 1836. He also had a sister named Johanna Doran who was born on March 7, 1842. David and Bessie settled in the Doran home near Blackwater when they married and it is still lived in by a descendant of the Ormond line.

Andrew immigrated to the US around 1848, I believe, through Castle Garden in New York.  He settled in York, Nebraska and married Elizabeth Kelly in October 1874. He had 5 children and died Nov. 21, 1919.

    Hope this helps,

    Mary
