I am looking for the home parish of James William Saunders and his wife Ann McKee. According to family information they emmigrated to Ireland from Edinburgh, Scotland in the 1820's or 1830's. They are my 3X great-grandparents. Their son, John Saunders, was born in Rasdrew, Glendrey, Kerry according to family records, in 1837. John served in the 20th Regiment of the Light Infantry in India (discharged Oct 1, 1859). He returned to England where he married Ellen Sullivan in 1860. The family, including my great-grandmother Bridget Marie Saunders, emmigrated to the US around 1871 (not certain of the date). Any assistance in locating their home parish would be appreciated.

Hi Moira Therese,
Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you.
In the meantime have you tried looking for records at:
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ Church records are currently been uploaded here. However so far only Co. Kerry, Carlow, Dublin CiTy and parts of Cork have been completed.
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
Also you could try looking for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century, there are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
These do not have any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place.
It may be an idea to look into John?s service record as there may be a record of his native parish. Check the UK National Archives for more information:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
Have you tried looking into the family?s emigration? Sometimes more infomation can be found at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. You may be lucky and find a place name here. For information on US immigration records check http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
