This American is wondering if she has cousins back in the homeland of her grandfather James Dwyer who left as a baby. James always said he was born in Moycarky and/or Horse and Jockey in Tipperary.
These are the facts I know: His father Richard (O?) Dwyer was raised in a county poorhouse in Tipperary near Kilnamanagh with his siblings; Michael, Anthony, James and Margaret (who died young). Richard fought for the Union Army in the USA in 1863. After the war he went back to Ireland where he worked as a gardener for the family named Fennant in the village of Moycarkey. There in 1872 he married Bridget Doyle who worked for a family named Buckly. A few years later they moved to Clonmel where he worked as gardener for a Mrs Crane. They had 5 children; Margaret, Patrick, Michael, Richard and James. They left Ireland in 1887 to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia where he worked as gardener at The Frasier Estate. Margaret & Michael remained there in Nova Scotia where Michael became Minister of Mines. Patrick went to Ohio, USA. Richard to California, USA. James went to Boston, Ma, USA where he married my grandmother Johanna Quinlan of Briggis, Newfoundland. They had 4 children; James, Kathleen, Dorothea and Margaret (my mother).
The Dwyer cousins in the US are spread all over this big country yet remain very close. We are all very proud to claim our Irish roots yet have never known any relatives back there. Not sure who would be left of our (O?) Dwyer relatives where my ancestors were orphans raised in the poorhouse and then all left? Have absolutely no historical knowledge of Bridget Doyle's family :(
Do I have any kin back in the motherland? Would love to know before my desired trip there in the next year or two.
