I am hoping to find exactly where my Leyden/Lynch ancestors resided. I know that John Leyden (b. abt. 1832) and Ann Lynch (b. abt. 1837) had two sons born in Miltown Malbay: Martin in 1865 and Patrick in 1869. My great grandfather, Michael (called "Mitch"), their brother, was born in Ireland in abt. 1868 but I'm not certain where.

I may have Leyden relatives in the Ennis but there is no documentation for this at the present.

If you know of a Leyden from this area I would love to hear from them and possibly find a connection. If you have a Leyden in your line, I would love to hear from you to see if we can find a connection.

Here is the 1865 civil birth index record for Martin Leyden. You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie to get a copy of the record. Fill out the GRO form and provide the year of birth, registration district (Ennistimon) and the volume and page number ( 4 and 280). Costs around 4 euros. The record will tell you where the family was living in 1865. I also found a baptismal index record for Patrick born September 25, 1869. (see below) I looked for Michael in 1868 but only saw Michael Leyden birth index records in Ennistimon for 1864, 1865, 1866 and 1872. Let me know which one makes sense and I can send you the particulars.

  • I am hoping to find more about where the lynch side of my mother's family came fore in Ireland. I do know Patrick Henry Lynch is my grandma's grand father I think, her name is Margaret Story now but her maiden name is Lynch.

P.S. The photo attached is Patrick Henry Lynch's family and my grandma

  • Hi Peggy,

    I searched the records today and found the following;

John Leyden born to John Leyden and Margaret Fitzpatrick 24 March 1832

John Leyden born to Martin Leyden and Sally Halloran 8 March 1840

John Leyden born to Michael Leyden and Mary Brogan 3 March 1844

John Leyden born to Pat Leyden and Ellen O Keefe 19 Oct 1833

John Leyden born to Mary Shalloe born 26 June 1844

None of the Leyden families in Miltown Malbay have a Martin Patrick and Michael listed. I feel that this family could possibly be from either Inagh or from Kilmurray Ibrikane parishes. I have found the following burial records from Inagh. If any ring a bell let me know.

Erected by Pat Lynch, Moughna, for his father, John, who died Feb. 18th 1872 aged 52 years, his
mother, Catherine, who died, May 22nd 1899 aged 86 years, his brother, Michael, died, April
    25th 1886? aged 20 years.

In loving memory of John Lynch, Moughna, who died, 14th June 1935 aged 75 years, Catherine
died, Oct. 1st 1946 aged 79 years, Martin, died, 14th April 1990 aged 86 years.

Erected by,? Leyden, a humble but loving son to the memory of his father, John Leyden, who died, March 18? And his mother Mary Ellen? Died January 20th 1880. (Old headstone and hard to read).

In loving memory of Bridget Leyden, Solyhane and late of Parnell St. Ennis, Joseph, died, May 1955 her husband Patrick, died, 1957, their son, Patrick, died, May 1997.

Erected by Mathias Leyden, for his father, John Leyden, who died, 27th March 1876, his mother Mary, died 20th January 1880, Martin Leyden, Soylshaune, died 2nd December 1969 aged 69 yrs. Susan Leyden, died, 4th December 1981 aged 71 yrs.

In loving memory of Mary Leyden, Maghera, who died 29th Jan. 1929
her husband Patrick, died, 2nd Jan. 1961, her daughter Mary, died, 1922 aged 6 yrs, Joseph Leyden, Coolshamrock Quinn, died, 11th July 1975
His wife Bridget (Nee Tuohy), died 21st June 1990.

In loving memory of Joseph Leyden, Inagh, who died, Jan. 7th 1970, his wife, Johanna, died, Oct. 4th 1980, Michael Leyden, 1856-1920, his wife Catherine, 1858-1927, his sister, Annie,
    1862 -1932 , daughter, Eileen, died, 4th February 1954.

There was a Paddy Leyden from Inagh who married O Brien from Miltown Malbay and who had a business on the Ennis Rd Miltown Malbay up until the 1970's. He had no family but had a nephew John who now lives in Ennis. All other Leydens from the Miltown Malbay area are gone. Immigrants from the western side of Inagh often gave their address as the nearest town Miltown Malbay.

I will check grave inscriptions for Moughanan grave yard also - this graveyard services people registered in Ennistymon and Inagh for births.

    Regards

  • Mr. McDonnell:

I didn't realize I'd get mail here so I am very happy about your information!

Michael Augustus Leyden was born 18 Mar 1868 but I cannot say where for sure. However, the brother born before him was Martin, and the brother born after him was Patrick. I have records which indicate both of them were born in Milltown Malbay. I see you have provided me with both of their records. Thank you. It is fitting that Michael was also born in the same area but I cannot be sure.

I am wondering if possibly they gave Milltown Malbay as the townland address for the registration of these births, while actually living elsewhere, possibly closer to Inagh. I have few of their cousins information of their births being in Inagh and East Sileshaun.

Nevertheless, I appreciate the time and effort you put into this and appologize for the delay in getting back with you. Thank you so much.

  • Brid:

Thank you. I have had possession of records for two of my Leyden ancestors birth in Milltown Malbay for quite some time now. Thank you for your efforts.

What I currrently seek is records for the births, marriages, or residence info of John, Mary, Ellen, or Hanorah Leyden(siblings) born between 1832-1854. Their parents would be John Leyden and Mary Guinan.

    Thank you again.

  • Brid:

If my ancestor, g-g-gf, John Leyden (born Dec 1832) left other siblings there in Ireland, it is possible one or more of these from your list would be descendents from these who stayed there in Ireland. Otherwise, unfortunately, I do not recognize any of the names. The dates of these deaths are more recent than the records I am hoping to obtain, as John Leyden and Ann Lynch came to the US around 1872. Also, at least two of their children were born in Ohio, USA.

I am sorry to learn from you that all the Leydens are gone from Milltown Malbay now. But actually, I am quite curious about your statement:

"Immigrants from the western side of Inagh often gave their address as the nearest town Miltown Malbay."

This is quite interesting and I am very glad to hear it! This would make a lot of sense and would possibly help to tie my Leyden clan to the many other Leydens currrently (and in the past as well) in the Inagh area!

What do you mean by "Immigrants" ? Do you mean those whoose ancestors already left Ireland?

Or, since I have two records of two Leydens born in Milltown Malbay, is it possible the mother gave Milltown Malbay as the address whereas they might have actually lived closer to Inagh?

Thank you for your efforts. It is very much appreciated.

I'm glad that you finally saw the responses that came from me and Brid. One of the problems with the current process is that researchers sometimes do not realize that one or more volunteers have responded to the query.

The Leydens may have lived in the village/town of Milltown Malbay but it is very possible that they lived in a townland in the surrounding area. The only way to confirm is to get one of the civil birth records from the GRO preferably Patrick's. Good luck!

  • Hi Irish Gal2:

    Do our Lynch lines connect?

I don't know much about my Lynch line (my g-g gm) but I know my Ann Lynch's (she was born about 1837) father was Patrick Lynch. Ann married John Leyden. One of their son's was named Patrick "H" Leyden. I am trying to find out what the "H" stands for, but I am thinking it is "Henry". This could be Ann's father's middle name as well. Patrick H Leyden is John Leyden's and Ann Lynch's third born son, so they didn't use the Irish Naming Pattern. Rather than the 3rd son being named after the father's father, he very well could have been named after HER father for whatever reason.

I have looked and looked for info on the Leyden's from Milltown Malbay (because of the birth records I found for their sons there) and it seems it was she, Ann Lynch, who probably came from Milltown Malbay, and not John Leyden. Thus this is why her son's (Martin and Patrick Leyden) were listed as being born in that area (1865 and 1869).

I have a picture of my g-g gf, Michael Leyden, that seems have been taken during about the same time as yours of Patrick Henry Lynch. Unless it is my imagination, there seems to be some resemblance. I am guessing, based on when my grandfather was born (1893), as he is in the picture also, that it was taken around 1907.

Please let me know if you (or anyone reading this) has any thoughts about any of this.

    Best wishes,

    Peggy Leyden

  • Hi Peggy,

Its been a while since i have checked messages. The parishes of Kilfarboy, Kilmurray Ibrikane and Inagh/Kilnamona border each other. Each parish is made up of a number of townlands. The townlands nearest to Kilfarboy(in which is the town Miltown Malbay), in the Inagh parish would often use the town for shopping and reference rather than Ennis which was the large shopping town on the Eastern side of the parish. I have come across many people who left the Inagh parish for Australia and America who gave their postal address as Miltown Malbay. Townlands in the Western side of the Inagh parish are only about 3 miles from Miltown Malbay. Unfortunately i still can not find any family of Leyden in Miltown records with the three brothers born around the 1860''s. I would feel strongly that they were baptised in the Inagh parish as Leyden name originated in that parish is Co Clare. Lynch on the other hand was a big name in the Kilmurray Ibrikane parish.

    I don't know if this helps;

  • I have checked Miltown records and unfortunately no Ann Lynch born to any of the Lynch families for the date specified. I feel the Lynch connection may be in Kilmurray Ibrikane. I will see what i can do.
