I am intersted in finding out more about any Clarkin's from Cootehill.
I saw an article published in the Boston paper in 1860 by Bridget Carney or Karn of Oak Creek, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, looking for Peter, Edward, Arhtur, Philip Clark. The article said they were originally from Coolkill, Matris, Co. Monaghan.
My own great-grandfather, Philip Clark 1820-1893 had a brother Edward b 1832-1898. It is said that their name was originally Clarkin. Edward's death certificate has his father as James. I know from the Griffith's Valuation that there was a James Clarkin in Cootehill.
Philip and Edward immegrated to Wyandotte, Michigan, USA via Canada.

Hi Colleen,
Thank you very much for your email.
Cootehill is a town in the civil parish of Drumgoon in Co. Cavan. The parish is on the border of Cavan/Monaghan.
Coolkill is a townland in the civil parish of Ematris in Co. Monaghan, so this is probably the address that was listed in the Boston paper:
I did a search for James Clarkin in Ematris parish in Griffith?s Valuation and one result came back:
As the parishes of Ematris and Drumgoon are beside each other it is possible that the James recorded in each parish is the same James.
For more information, you could try looking in church records. It may be an idea to start with Ematris parish as this was the address given. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Ematris parish, follow this link:
For Drumgoon:
As you can see from the above links Monaghan Genealogy and Cavan Genealogy have copies available, here are their email addresses respectively if you would like to contact them:
Please note however that a fee may apply.
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
