Hello everyone, I came across this website while researching my Great Grandparents.  I live in the State of New Jersy in the United States.

My Great Grandmother was Catherine Doran and below is her family information I have found by pulling birth records, death records ect.  Any help you can provide would be great!

Father:  John Doran

Mother:  Johanna Lewis

Marriage:  1859(I believe)

Ellen Doran born 28th May 1864 notation is Shrone, Kilbehenny

Catherine born 15, April 1866 emigrated to the US in 1889 and married Paul O'Callaghan

John born 8, February 1868

Jeremiah and Bridget twins born 6 September 1869

Any ideas to find out how to track her parents or siblings and what would be next steps as far as records go.

Thanks

I can?t see anywhere in Limerick called Shrone. However what looks like Ellen's birth was registered in Mitchelstown 1864 Vol 14, page 797. That birth certificate should clarify the place of birth.

What looks to be the twins (Jeremiah & Bridget?s) births were registered in Mitchelstown 1869 Volume 14, page 827 (same reference for both). If you order a copy of one of those certificates it should give you the parents townland (address) at that time which may help focus the research.

I wonder if this is Jeremiah in the 1901 census:

     and in 1911:

Rootsireland (pay to view) has a match for the marriage between John & Johanna in 1859 in Kilbehenny. You may wish to check that out (don?t expect a lot of detail. RC marriage records for the mid 1800s didn?t have much detail):

You can also use the above site to check for children to the couple. There appear to have been at least 7, possibly 9, depending on how you input the parents names.

  • Hi thank you for the response, I do have the copies of the record books for the Doran children above which match your finding's and in the book it looks like Shrone, Kilbehanney for his father's townland address.  All of the children I found were entered as Michaelstown.

I did find that marriage record but since the date was Jan 1 I was not sure if this was the correct marriage date as Jan 1 is sometimes a default when they don't know the real date.  I will recheck my search in rootsweb to see If I can match your 7 or 9.

Thanks for the info on the census.  I do know that Jerimiah came over to the US in 1892 but not sure if he stayed.

    Thanks again.

  • It was very common to marry on dates like Christmas Day or New Years Day (there were few holidays in those days) and so 1st Jan is probably correct.

I think you?ll find Michaelstown is a mistake for Mitchelstown. Mitchelstown is the civil registration town for the area that includes Kilbehenny.

Use this site here to look at all the townlands in Kilbehenny. (Enter Limerick county and then click the civil parish option).

I can?t see anything that looks much like Shrove. Scrowmore is the only one beginning with S. Could it be that?  Perhaps by getting one of the twins birth cert, you may get another clearer version. Ordering a copy of the original document also eliminates transcription errors such as you get on some pay to view sites, and they often have more detail on them too. Not all the transcription sites contain every piece of information on the original documents eg occupations or witnesses to marriages etc.

You can order a photocopy of the cert from GRO Roscommon for ?4. Put the place, year, quarter (where there is one), volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Put ?please e-mail to?..? clearly on the top of the form.

  • Thank you very much for the information I will certainly try to obtain the copy and see if it gives me the correct town.

  • Thanks for the info when I go to the GRO Website, I clicked on Apply for Cert and then under birth i printed out the form.

Is this the correct form I would need to request?  Just want to make sure.  the options are birth certificate, special services or authenticated.  Would I choose special services?

    Thanks again for your help

  • Kathy,

That is the right form. There is a fourth option which is photocopy. I recommend you go for a photocopy. At ?4, it?s lot cheaper then a full cert at ?20.
