Looking for more information/records on my great, great, grandfather Thomas Lundy of County Mayo. He was born around 1822 and had four other brothers: Anthony, Jimmy, John, and Michael. Thomas immgrated to the United States around 1848 by way of a British boat (came through New Orleans). At least one, if not two other brothers accompanied him to The United States, one brother immigrated to Australia and the other (John Lundy) stayed in Ireland. I believe the Lundys may have lived perhaps in/around the Turlough Parish? I am documenting our family tree and would like to see if I can find the names of the parents of Thomas Lundy. Also, I am planning a trip to Ireland Summer 2014 and would very much like to visit with any living relatives/descendents of the John Lundy line and also maybe identify the location of the original Lundy Farm in County Mayo. Not sure where to begin...
Thank you

Allison:
RC church records for Turlough parish are available starting in 1847 which is after when Thomas and his siblings were born. I looked at the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Turlough parish and found one record: an Ellen Lundy who lived in Park townland. Of the 17 Lundy records in Co. Mayo, there was only one John Lundy who lived in Gowel townland in Kilbeagh parish. Kilbeagh is east of Turlough close to the town of Charlestown.
There were 55 individuals named Lundy in Co. Mayo in the 1901 census. No families in Park but a couple in Gowel. You can check the census at www.census.nationalarchives.ie
Let me know if I can help further.

Hi Allison,
Further to Roger's assistance, if you google eircom you'll get the Irish phone book. There are 4 Lundys in Mayo you could contact.
In the Tithe Applotments (1823-37) which are freely available online there are 36 Lundys with 5 in Mayo - 4 in Toomore parish & 1 in Kilcommon.
A public member tree on ancestry.com has a possible match - did Thomas die in Colorado? if not, can you give spouse and children's names please?
I did an exhaustive search on www.rootsireland.ie/. I couldn't get all the brother's births in 1 county.
There are possible birth matches for all but Anthony in county Down. I wondered if the boys could have been born in the north and then the family moved to Mayo.

Thanks so much to the two of your for your friendly assistance--you have introduced me to some new links and Internet resources. I do believe Thomas to have lived around the Turlough area and have found reference to a farm around Shinnaugh (Shinaugh--spelling?). I am unaware of his parents' names but would have to think they would have been covered in the 1901 and 1911 census. Thomas left Ireland for work in England temporarily and then arrived to the U.S. via New Orleans. He settled in/around Galena, Illinois and was buried there. I have been able to get in touch with some relatives (under a different name) living in Castlebar. I am hoping they may be able to fill in some of the historical blanks for me.
Is Lundy a very common name in Ireland? I am thinking it is a bit more unique and certainly less common now than years before, so that should help in my search.
Thank you again for so much help!

Allison:
The townland is Shinnagh in Turlough civil parish.
The name Lundy is not a common name. There were 513 people named Lundy in Ireland in 1901. About 11% were in Mayo. A good number of Lundys were in Northern Ireland particularly Antrim and Down.
