Hi from Australia.  I am researching my extended family and have found the Going family from what I am assuming to be Belle Isle, although I found reference to Belleisle to the marriage Elizabeth Going, (daughter of James Going and Marcella nee Welsh) to Henry Collis, 22 April 1799.

May I please ask if anyone else has researched the Going / Collis family?  The only information I have on Henry Collis is from Limerick where he served as High Sheriff.  He passed away in 1827 and was laid to rest in the family vault at Askeaton, Limerick.

Any information for the Going family would be very welcomed as I have hit that "brick wall"

Thanking you in advance.  Kind regards  Judi

  • Dear Judi:

    Thanks for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.

    There is a townland called Belleisle, however it is in County Fermanagh, which is Northern Ireland.  There are a number of records available online through the Northern Ireland registers office.  If you go to www.proni.gov.uk, you should be able to have a look through and see if there is any reference to the surnames that you have mentioned.

    It is possible that Henry Collis came from Limerick and married his wife in her home place in County Fermanagh.

    Let me know how you get on and if I can be of further assistance.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Jane,

    Thank you for your reply, it is very much appreciated.  I had a look on the website from your link above and found 8 Going family members with Pre 1858 Wills.  It does give references for the Wills but where do I go to look at them?  Are they available on the website?  I have searched and cannot find anything further on this.

    The Going family that I have found came from Co. Clare.  I have found a document on the internet for the Going family and it states: ..... "James, of Bellisle, Doonass, Co. Clare, and Cragg, Co. Tipperary, d. 16 Dec. 1797, will pd. Prerog. 1805, m. 1765 Marcella (Margery) Welsh of Newtown and had issue...."

    I also found the following:  The Going Family By Noel Murphy - Source: - Rosemary ffolliott’s BMD’s on microfiche in Limerick County Library. (1750 to 1825 approx.):  Ennis Chronicle, Thursday 21 Dec 1797, Died last Saturday at his seat at Belleisle, Co. Clare, James Going.  And also:  Limerick Chronicle, Wednesday 24 April 1799,  Married on Monday at Belleisle, Co. Clare, Mr Henry Collis of this city to Miss Elizabeth Going, daughter of the late James Going.

    James and his wife Marcella (Margery) nee Welsh are the parents of Elizabeth Going who married Henry Collis.

    Kind regards

    Judi

    Please edit your original post and give it a meaningful subject and add the relevant surnames.  I clicked on it by accident and discovered that I was able to help; if you don't help others by doing this, then it is unlikely that anyone will even read your message.

    Belle Isle House is in the townland of Illaunyregan; see map.

    Check out this article for lots more on the Goings, Collises, etc.:

      author = {C. C. Ellison},
      title = {Going of Munster},
      journal = {Irish Ancestor},
      year = {1977},
      volume = {IX},
      pages = {21--43},
      number = {1},

  • Henry was the son of Revd William Collis of Ballyhoman. William's wife Eliza died in 1804 - http://www.limerickcity.ie/media/06 30 04.pdf Both William and Eliza were buried at Askeaton - https://historicgraves.com/st-mary-s/li-smak-0198/grave

    Revd William was probably the son of Revd Henry Collis of Ballyhoman who died in 1786. He is fairly well documented, there are a couple of references to him in https://archive.org/details/fastiecclesiaehi01cott/page/398 Both Revd Henry and Revd William are residing at Ballyhoman in the 1776 freeholders list.

    Revd Henry was the son of William Collis of Lisodeige in Kerry, see https://archive.org/stream/selectionsfromol00hick#page/n123/mode/2up for more family details.

    Cheers

    John
