  • Hi Mike,

I'm not sure if this is what you're after but there are 2 marriage records for Henry to Bridget McHale on www.rootsireland.ie/:

Henry Lawlor and Henry Lawler both 1867. (I suspect they might be identical)

It costs to get the full record on rootsireland.ie but it would have the fathers' names and the parish to help you keep working back.

  •  Col -

Thanks for the suggestion.  I did get both records to compare which leads to more questions:

    1. Last name misspelled as Lawler on Church record  - I know this often happens.

    2. Goom's father's name is Michael -  Michael is the 2nd son's name, the first is James which doesn't follow the traditional naming flow but again may not have been followed.

    3. Bride's father's name is Thomas - not a name which is repeated in the family to this day?

    4. No mother's names are listed - I know women were often excluded from records.

    5. Witness 1 is the same on both documents and is Mangan whcih appears in another family line of McHale's in Killala, Mayo as a son in-law's surname?

    6. Witness 2 is listed as Ann McHale on the Church Marriage Record and Maria Brennan on the Civil Marriage Record - Ann McHale would make sense as the bride's maiden name is McHale but Brennan is an unknown surname in any of my family lines?

With all of this being said, any suggestions?  I'm hesitant to had any of this inforamtion to my existing tree until I can verify it further.

Thanks again and good luck with your search Col!

      Cheers - Mike

  • Hi Mike,

If you search www.rootsireland.ie/ baptisms/births for surname Lawlor with no first name entered father Henry and mother McHale Bridget you will get 23 matches.

This should give you the missing one (and a few extra perhaps?)

If you google Griffiths Valuation you can search it for free on askaboutireland

Enter Lawlor surname and select county Mayo; there are 5 records including 2 Michaels and 2 Anns all in Ballysakeery. These are occupiers / lessors and shows where they were in 1856 - the year Griffiths was done in Mayo.

The Tithe Applotments are also free to search; there are only 2 LawlErs and no Lawlors in Mayo in 1825

I had a look on my cd Irish Memorial Inscriptions Galway & Mayo but there were no Lawlors / Lawlers on it.

    Good luck with it Mike!
