spelling of Carroll

Thanks for your message. I hope that someone with good knowledge of the surname gets in touch and helps you in your research.

I have not come across these spellings before. If you go to the Irish TImes website, they have  a surname database based on surnames that were recorded in Ireland in the 19th century. There is no mention of the spellings you have used. Here is a link that shows the variants (on the right hand side of the page)

Some of them may be pronounced similarity but spelled differently, for example Keighroll and Keroll. Which begs the question where have you found the spellings you mentioned? Is it possible that they were recorded after the person emigrated and were possibly written down phonetically? Sometimes after emigration names were recorded incorrectly due to difficulty with accents etc and the fact that a lot of Irish emigrants couldn?t read or write.

I Thank you for your reply. I found an document where a James Carroll was saying that his name was Keighroll but no one knew how to pronounce or spell it so he went by the name of Carroll here in Australia. I was wondering if it would narrow the search if Keighroll was common in Ireland. Thank you for the link, i will go and look at it right now, Regards Sue
