I am looking for any information concerning Margaret COYLE, b. Feb 1, 1887 to Joseph and Catherine (Gillen) Coyle of Roo, Ballybay. Specifically I would like to know if she married and with whom and the date of her death. She is buried in the Carrickatee cemetery but I have not been able to find her headstone there (in the same plot her brothers Owen and Patrick are also buried). She was Catholic and her father died in 1897, her mother in 1919, both in Roo. Her older sister was my grandmother Mary who emigrated to the US in Oct 1897.

I went to www.findmypast.ie which is a subscription service and looked for Margaret Coyle marriages in the Castleblayney registration district. I found one in 1912 and another in 1916. The index records are below. Both records show four male names. Margaret in each record married one of the four. Findmy past shows all male names recorded on the page. You could write to the GRO and tell them you are looking for a marriage for a Margaret Coyle from Roo and give them the info from both index records. They should be able to search and find the correct record. A copy for one record costs around 4 euros. If you want to go through this process let me know and I can give you instructions.

  • Good morning, Roger

Thank you for addressing my question so promptly. I have seen these records but, as you suggest, there isn't enough information there to make a decision of any kind. I would like to do as you indicate and write to the GRO (I was there in person last Feb and found a number of things but I hadn't seen yet the two records you mention for Margaret). If you could send me instructions about how to approach this by mail or e-mail, I'd be grateful. When my grandmother left Ireland in 1897, all contact with her siblings was lost, but I've managed to "reconstruct" the family to a fair degree by research. I can't help but think I have some relatives in Ballybay still who carry the name of Margaret's husband. I'd love to look them up the next time my wife and I are in Ireland.

    Thanks again

    John

The instructions are below. I would give them the two index records and ask for the Margaret from Roo.

    Roger

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Thank you, Roger. I will try this. If I understand you correctly, once printed and filled out, I would mail the form (i.e. snail mail) to the GRO, but I could ask them to send me the results by e-mail to speed things up a bit.

I decided this morning to try something. Since the two marriages took place in 1912 and 1916, I looked for any Margaret (or Maggie) Coyle of marriageable age across Monaghan in the 1911 census. Once I specified RC, single, etc., under "Margaret" I came up with ONLY my great aunt in Roo; when I tried "Maggie" I came up with only one other possibility, in Killygally, Lough Fea (or Loughfea), 21 year old Maggie, a servant at the Duffy household. I don't think a marriage in Killygally would have been registered in Castleblayney, but since she was a servant, it's possible her home parish was in fact in the Castleblayney registration district. What is very clear to me is that my great aunt Margaret is almost certainly one of those two brides you found in the records. (I suspect it is the 1912 marriage and that the groom was Edward Connolly whose family lived in Roo, almost next door to Margaret's house, in 1901. Ed was a bit long in the tooth, as they say, but I've seen enough of those "May-December" marriages in Irish records to know that was really no problem at all!)

  • Just to update. I was recently able finally to find and access the actual death notice for Margaret Coyle (I know it's her because her townland is mentioned). Now I know she died of brain cancer, a spinster, in 1946 in Castleblaney. She never married.

  • A wonderful resource is irishgenealogy.ie.  Margaret's actual death registration can be found here:

  • Thank you for your reply, smjh. This is the very resource I used to locate Margaret's death certificate and, you're right, it is indeed wonderful, easy to use and comprehensive. Being able to see the actual documents without travelling to Dublin and the GRO is a real improvement (I have been to the GRO twice, but this is SO much easier and convenient!).

  • I Note that this thread is enquiring of Markey’s of Monaghan

My GGG Grandfather was deported from Ireland departing Cork on the Pilot, 7 years to Sydney Australia1815, documentation I have states he was from Monaghan born 1791-2.

I ve looked at some details bur cant make a connection.

Wondering if there is any think you have in your details which may assist or if you are aware of someone who may have done work on the the Markey’s from Monaghan

I have a DNA profile if that assists????,

  • This is a general question that someone on this forum may be able to answer. I have information about Aghayest townland, Aghnamullen, Monaghan, but I do not know where this townland is. It no longer appears in any standard list of townlands in Aghnamullen. Am I wrong in thinking this is perhaps an ancient name for Aghakista (or, as I think it is today, Aghavista)?

  • David, concerning the Markey family of Ballybay. My grt grandmother Alice b. 1859 is said to have emigrated in 1881 with her sister Mary who was already married to Patrick McGinn. They settled in the area of Omaha, Nebraska and Alice married later that year to Charles O'Neill. On ancestry.com there is a family tree called McGinnandall that lists Alice and Mary's siblings and parents, who were Thomas Markey and Mary McCabe, if I remember right. I wonder if this family tree might be of some help to you. I inherited large wall portraits of Thomas and Mary Markey, but have little information other than dates and location and children. Through 23and me.com DNA Relatives I have been in touch with another Markey descendant from Elizabeth "Betty" Markey, another sister of Alice and Mary. I am not actively searching, but would enjoy any other information on the Markey family of Ballybay.
