According to his second marriage certificate, my great great grandfather James Milligan was born in Drung, Co Cavan C1824 to parents Stewart/Stuart Milligan (a publican) & Susan Pickens. His first marriage took place in South Australia to Margaret Ferguson. They came to Victoria.I have been unable to find a death for this man.

I am visiting Ireland in June and wonder if I will see or learn anything of my Milligan ancestry, if I go to Drung.

Any help here would be reatly appreciated.

  • Hi Roshane

    1. Do contact Cavan Genealogy they can do a family search for you.

They have access to parish records which predate the civil registrations or you can search Rootsireland.ie.

    2. Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm You would hope that if he died he died within Civil Registration

    3. You can look up familysearch.org (free site)

    4.  I searched http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index but found nothing, but I just put in Milligan & Drung as the parish, you can put different spellings in & may get something, free site, but if father was a publian he may not have owned land

5 I searched http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie and found a Peter Milligan in Kildrumsheridan, which is close to Drung, also free site

    6. http://www.failteromhat.com/pigot/0096.pdf, this directory lists those who are merchants, I looked up Cootehill & did not find him, but look at Cavan and a few other places nearby in Co Cavan & Monaghan and he may turn up.

    7.  He did not turn up in http://www.failteromhat.com/slater/0172.pdf either.

    8.  I cant find any Milligans in the 1901 census, but I found 1 in 1911 aged 7 see this link, in the Cootehill Area http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cavan/Cootehill_Rural/…

What religion did they belong to?, you might have a good chance of contacting the local church.

When you are searching, broaden it out to look for brothers using names that he called his own childen after, hopefully you might find a person to take you within the realms of Civil Registration & it would give you a good lead.

Hopefully I have given you some leads that you have not tried before, it is not a common name, which is good.

Do let me know how you got on & if I can help you further please let me know.

I have just come across this post and have a heritage from William Stewart Mulligan, who it would seem is a brother to James.  One of the confusions is that after coming to Australia as "Mulligan's", they changed their name to Milligan.  My hypothesis is that tha anti Catholic Irish sentiments abounding in the 1860s meant it may have been politic to change names.  If my memory serves, the father Stuart/Stewart was a publican/farmer in Corovogey, and is visible in the 1821 census.  This census and a lot of data show that Stewarts wifes name was Susanna.  I am in two minds over the last name "Pickens", primarily because the census shows a Mary Pickens as a servant, at the time of your and my ancestors birth.  Not withstanding this, I am pleased to find a ancestor that I didnt know of as he was born after the census, which shows 12 brothers and sisters.

  • Dear Boyd

I had a wonderful but brief trip to Cavan. The people there were most hospitable and helped me to locate a living Mulligan relative named Robert. He was an absolute delight. The Mulligans are Church of Ireland, not Catholics as I had expected.

I had ordered the 1821 Census from the Cavan Geni Centre before I went, so went armed with it and the details of James' parentage from his second marriage certificate.

Robert provided me with a list of baptisms for the family, these can now be found on Family Search. The census also now available on Find My Past.

I have been viewing a tree of Milligans on Ancestry for some time now, ( in the Traralgon area of Victoria) Are you connected with them?

I can be contacted directly on my other email address........roshanecrowley@gmail.com

I would love to hear from you and am willing to share any information I have.

    Cheers Rosemary Crowley
