~~Dia dhaoibh!

I live in Dublin and plan to come to Carlow and Kilkenny in 2014 to do some family history research. In Carlow, I’d like to connect with any Hinches who might be able to fill me in on gaps in my family. My maternal grandfather was Henry Hinch, who was baptised on 6 August 1898 in Limerick. However, his parents, John Hinch and Ellen Rice, were married in Clonegal, Shillelagh, Co. Carlow on 13 August 1878. His address was Ballylower and hers was Sherwood. Their first children, James, Mary and Julia were born in Carlow 1883 -1889.

John’s father was James Hinch. Ellen’s was Patrick Rice, a former British Army soldier, and she was born in India. According to Griffith’s Valuation in 1852, there were 5 James Hinches and several Patrick Rices in Hacketstown. The Tithe Applotment of 1832 shows a James Hinch at Rathnafushoge, Hacketstown. So I’d like to start my search there to see if there are any connections left.

It’s local knowledge that I need now. I’m happy to visit parish offices or local libraries, but mostly it’s to see the places named in the records that I’ve already located.

Thanks for any help you can give.

  • Dear Hacketstown,

Well, it took a bit longer than planned to make it to carlow, but I made a lovely visit just before Easter. It was unplanned, en route home from Cork, where I had attended a family history conference. I went to Clonegal, where my great-grandparents (see above) were married in 1878. It is such a nice village! I spent an hour in the graveyard and found a few Rice headstones, although I don't know if they are my family. Anyway, having breached the boundary of Carlow and discovered what a lovely county it is, I will be back. Next time, it has to be Hacketstown... Slán go fóill, Audrey

  • Dear Audrey

I'm so sorry to report that our volunteer isn't available during this time but wondered if you had managed to visit the Valuation Office on Abbey Street to see if they can help you sort out the tangle of Hinches in Hacketstown?

  • Thanks, Clare, that's a good idea. I've only recently started to use the Valuation Office, so this would be useful for my learning curve! It would be very interesting to see what it throws up for Hacketstown.

    Go raibh míle maith agat!
