Hello all,

New to the site and using all of my little grey cells to track down relatives on my dads side of the family.

Patrick was my paternal Great Grandfather, one of his sons Michael married Mary Galway and they had my dad and uncle David both of whom are also deceased now (never met my uncle or any other relatives out there so desperately seeking any help thats available).

According to the 1901 census he was born in 1851 but according to the 1911 census he was 62!! I have his marriage to Margaret Lyons as 15/11/1893 as listed for Listowel from Ancestry.co.uk and from Irish Genealogy its listed in Duagh which I see is only about 10 mins down the road. The information I have showed they had 13 children. I have marriages for a couple of them and 2 died still plowing through who did what and with whom!

Any help that can be given to find info about his side of the family would be greatly appreciated. Im coming over to Ireland later in the year but not sure if im going to be able to get to Duagh myself, although I will do my best but on a budget.

In anticipation thanks xx

Generally, ages in the 1901 and 1911 censuses were not consistent. Usually the 1901 census age was understated. The Old Age Pension program was put in place in 1908-1909 and people started showing their real age in the 1911 census. Patrick and Margaret were married in 1883. I didn't know if the Ancestry data was wrong or 1893 was a typo. I'm trying to pull up the civil marriage index record but my source is having systems problems. The actual marriage record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living when married. If you don't have the actual record and want a copy, I can explain the process.

I also looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Duagh civil parish. I did not find any Shanahans in Knockalougha townland but there were 3 Lyons listings: Denis, Jeremiah and Thomas. I'm wondering if one of the three was the father of Margaret and Patrick and Margaret inherited the farm. See link below.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the reply..oops I meant 1883 for the marriage and not 93. I know they got married in Duagh in  the Parish Church both RC but thats it at the moment

I wont be able to get the marriage cert till end of month. I have a list of certs I need and slowly working my through them at 20 euros a pop! Will email GRO in Dublin and get it then.

Startng to search for the marriages of both sets of parents and their dobs so will continue with all searches. I have Shanahan's, Galways and Carolans on my dads side too, not to mention my mums side who were Scottish and Lancashire.

    The search goes on......

  • You don?t need to pay ?20 per certificate. You can get a photocopy for ?4. Tick the relevant box on the order form.

I had the same reaction as Elwyn (Ahoghill Antrim). Here are some instructions.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Thanks for that, I already knew about the GRO forms, im not keen on sending my card details via fax or post hence would rather pay the full fee!

  • If you don?t want to give your card details out, then just stick a 5 euro note in the envelope instead. That works fine provided  you are not bothered about the ?1 change.

  • Lynn, If you are still looking for information, Patrick Shanahan the son of Patrick Shanahan and Margaret Lyons was interviewed by Maurice O'Keeffe for his Life and Lore Audio Books series and is available for download at  https://www.irishlifeandlore.com/product/patrick-shanahan-b-1927/

In Disk 3  he talks about his ancestors going back to 1860 and where they came from before they settled in Knockalougha. Patrick died in 2013 but still has family in Knockalougha.
