Hello,

I've just joined the group in the hope that someone can point me in the right direction in finding information on my great great grandmother Mary JOHNSTON who migrated to Australia on 18 Dec 1865 on the ship Star of Brunswick.  The only information I have for her came from the shipping records - Age: 26, Occupation: Domestic Servant, Religion: Roman Catholic, Native Place: Fahey, County Clare, Ireland and the depositor was Charles Delly.

If her age on the shipping records is correct then I'm looking for a birth or baptism around 1839 and her mother's name may have been Rose or Rosanna.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Jen. (Sydney, Australia)

  • Hi Jen,

There is one Maryanne Jo(h)nston in 1838 in Co Galway, (if Inishcaltra Parish this would be fairly close to Feakle Parish and it was moved to Clare Co. in 1898's local land act).

    See: http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y

    Church BaptismJonstonMaryanne1838Co. Galway

This is a per fee site but cost per record is not very expensive.  Since this was the only possible one at the right time frame, it may pay off to get this record.  It is possible this family moved from Galway to Clare as well sometime after this baptism.

There are nine families in the Tithe Applotment records on Clare Library site at:

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/tithe_applot/name_in…

There are no Johnston Tithe Applotment records in Feakle Parish Tithes. (FAHA is FAHY) See: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/tithe_applot/feakle_…

There are Johnston records in the Griffiths Valuation (1855) but none in Fahy.

Don't forgert that FAHY is also a surname in addition to be a townland name.

There are many pages of JOHNSTONs in the records at Clare Library site.  See: http://google.clarelibrary.ie/search?q=johnston&btnG=Search+main+websit…

    Hope that helps,

  • Hi James,

Thanks for your help and advice.

I have been to the rootsireland site before and purchased various records but they only show transcriptions not the actual scanned documents which is a pity.  The entry for Maryanne Jonston in Co. Galway gives Thomas as her father and Mary as her mother.

I understand the baptismal records for Feakle and Tulla start at 1860 so there is a possibility that my Mary Johnston was born in Fahy but there are no records back that far.  I have a feeling her mother was named Rose because she donated money to St. Patricks Catholic Church in Sydney in memory of her husband Samuel Elliott and a Rose Johnston.

I will look at the various links you gave me and see if I can find any more information.

    Thanks once again,

    Jen.

  • Dear James,

I have recently discovered my Mary Johnson/Johnston was born in Drogheda, Louth and came to Australia on 06 Jun 1866 on the ship Peerless.  Her father's name was James Johnson/Johnstone and her mother's name was Rose Corbally.  On Mary's immigration record she said her parent's were living in Rope Walk, Drogheda in 1866.

I found her baptismal entry in St. Peter, Drogheda and also a baptism for a brother -

1837 October 6  Mary Johnson F. Ja's & Rose Corballis  Sponsor Anne Corbelly

1843 September 2  James Johnson son of James Johnson and Rose Corbally  Sponsor Cath Devin

The sponsor at Mary's baptism - Anne Corbally- was Rose's sister and she married Patrick Hughes in 1840 in Drogheda and they migrated to Australia arriving on 11 Mar 1841 on the ship Glenswilly.

I found that Patrick Hughes paid the deposit for Mary to come to Australia on 09 Aug 1865 and an aunt Anne Hughes, living in Sydney, was recorded on Mary's immigration record.

    Kind regards,

    Jen Meadows
