Dear Irelandxo,

I am Doug Ryan from Arden, North Carolina, USA.  My great-grandfather was Thomas J. Hill.  Thomas was born in Miltown Malbay in 1845, and emigrated to the US in 1863.  His parents were Michael Hill and Mary O'Dwyer Hill.  Thomas had three brothers (Anthony and Patrick emigrated to the US, another to England), and two sisters (one emigrated to Australia, the other stayed in Ireland).

I would like to find birth records for Thomas and marriage records for his parents.  I will be in Miltown Malbay next month (May) and would like to view these records if they are available.  Can they be viewed at St. Josephs church in Miltown Malbay?  I am aware that these records are available in Dublin, however I have no plans to visit Dublin on this trip.

Looking forward to your reply,

Doug Ryan

  • Hi Doug:

Many thanks for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.

Will you email me at tulla@irelandxo.com?  I know several people through XO that may be able to assist you as they have done others recently in your parish area.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi Doug,

Michael Hill married to Mary Dwyer (Lived in the town of Miltown)

    John            31 March 1845

    John            9 Nov 1846

    Michael       24 Feb 1847

    Martin         28 Oct 1848

    Mary           27 Aug 1850

    Patrick        4 March 1859

    Anthony     11 April 1860

    Anthony      24 Jan 1863

    Patrick        4 October 1865

The first two children are registered as John. Usually this means that the first died as an infant. Perhaps in this instance the son born first was called Thoman John and survived.

The Hills were land owners in the town of Miltown and there is still a lanmark called Hill's Lane. I will be happy to collect more information for you which you can collect when you arrive here. My email is taltybrid@gmail.com.

    Regards

  • Doug,

As the marrige was before 1857, there is no marriage record available in the parish. Civil records also commenced in 1865.

  • If you put a post on Clare library clare past forum (clarelibrary.ie) you will get Lucille Ellis who has extensive research on the O'Dwyers (mainly of annagh just a few miles from Miltown but she probably also has knowledge of the Miltown Branch. The Annagh o'Dwyers are all called Anthony and are landowners like the Hills so you are possiby dealing with the same branch. She will know. . As you have several Anthonys in the family she may well be able to track down the Dwyer side for you
