I am searchng for any trace of Martin O'Grady and Mary Casey from Tipperary in the 1800s. They had sons John (b. 1814) and Patrick who worked in Limerick as Blacksmiths until they emigrated to Australia and the U.S. respectively in 1841. Martin and Mary may have also been from Limerick but on John's passneger list he is said to be from Tipperary and working in Limerick. I cannot find any definite record for both of either of theem online-I've tried ancestry.com, findmypast.ie, rootsireland.ie and familysearch.org.

Any help of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. As you have not been successful in your search of the sites you mentioned, it may because the records do not exist.

Besides the church records, other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation. Even though these sources only record the head of the household, the information is very important and can be valuable. Have you had a look at these yet? Even though they are later than your indicated time span, some of the family may have remained, though without a parish to focus on it will be difficult to determine which, if any, are your ancestors.

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

The National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  you can search the 1901/1911 Census on the National Archives page too, for instances of the family name at that time

Some blacksmiths in Ireland are listed here going back to the 1800s:

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • Hi Clare,

Thank you for your reply. I have looked at the tithes and griffiths valuation and there are a few possiiblities from the results. Also, from this search I've come to realise that they may have been from Kilkenny, in the parish of Urlingford which is not far from Tipperary.

    Thanks agains for your help,

    Aoife
