Tipperary Murphys

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I think that as I was unable to locate Richard in the Griffith's Valuation in Carrick and as the Murphy name is so numerous, the best thing would be to follow the line of Anastasia and  and Frederick. Do you have any information about any children they may have had, or what happened to them?

With regard to Anastasia and Frederick, they were married on 16 July 1853, Carrick-On-Sur, Waterford – in the Church of Ireland (interesting given she was Catholic). Not sure why they married there as there does not appear to be any other family link with the area (but I could be wrong). They had six children, three of whom were born in Ireland: Jane Isabella Maunsell (Born Abt. 1854 in Waterford), John Richard (Born Abt. 1856 in Limerick) and Frederick (Born Abt. 1857). I have no birth/baptism records for those children, only that their names/ages were referenced in Anastasia’s death certificate. The family left Ireland in 1858, via Liverpool, and came to Melbourne where Anastasia and Frederick had a further three children. Anastasia died in Melbourne in 1867 after which Frederick remarried and seemed to disappear. Jane Isabella and John Richard both died (12yrs & 9.5yrs respectively) in Melbourne – I have no record of Frederick.

I wasn’t sure about your reference to being unable to locate Richard in the Griffith’s Valuation in Carrick – just to clarify I’d expect any land would be in/near the Tipperary Parish. Interestingly, I found an "old" family history done (here in Melbourne) by a daughter of William, who was the son of Richard and my g/g grandfather’s brother, where mention was made of the family’s "land" in Ireland and "riding horses on it". Needless to say I can’t dismiss the possibility that she "imagined" this!

Also, I appreciate that Murphy is a very common name but it had been suggested to me that there were not as many in Tipperary than say Cork, Waterford etc – is that true?

I had a look on www.rootsireland.ie and found the details of 6 baptisms of children born to a father Frederick Bradshaw and mother first name Anastasia. I am limited as to what I can see as it is a subscription site, but it might be a good idea to have a look and see what records are relevant to you. The detail I can see includes:

Frederick Henry, baptised 1851, Co. Dublin

Louisa Laughton, baptised 1853, Co. Dublin

Jane Isabella, baptised 1854, Co. Kilkenny

John Richard, baptised, 1856 Co. Limerick

Frederick, baptised 1857, Co. Limerick

John William, baptised 1862, Co. Meath

There are 2 matches for a marriage record for a Frederick in 1850 in Dublin and in 1905 in Antrim.

If you want to have a look at those, you can get back to me and let me know what you think. You may be able to find out more about Isabella?s family through these records.

In relation to land in Carrick, Carrick-on-Suir is in the Civil Parish of Carrick:

While there are no Bradshaw tenants there are Bradshaw landowners listed on the Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864), probably an ancestor of Anastasia?s husband, a William H Bradshaw:

Thank you for the information/guidance.  I'll certainly follow-up on the children. Frederick was baptised John Frederick and Anastasia was recorded as Anne on their marriage certificate which also records his father as Robert and mother as Jane.
