Hello,

I will be coming to Ireland in late September 2014. We will stay in Dublin for a couple of days then slowly drive down to Tulla and Kilkenny. In Tulla I hope to find out more on my GGrandfather William Francis Obrien born 1863.....his parents were William Obrien/Jane Callen.

In Kilkenny I hope to find any family history on Williams wife Anastasia Jackman born 1858 in Bennetsbridge. ( my GGrandmother). Both are buried here in Perth Western Australia.

When in Dublin were would I go to start my searching.

Kind regards Nola.

  • Both William and Anastasia were born before the start of civil birth records, so a search of church records would be required to see if baptism records can be found. If your ancestors were Catholic then the best place to start your search for details is the National Library, Kildare Street in Dublin. They have microfilms of most of the historic Catholic registers from around Ireland.

There are a few different locations named Tulla but I'd say the best known is the town of that name in Co. Clare. Is this the 'Tulla' William's family came from ?

O'Brien is certanly a common surname in Co. Clare..

The RC parish for the town of Tulla, Co. Clare is also called Tulla and the Film reference for these registers is Pos. 2471. Baptism and Marriage records for the parish go back a little earlier than most to about 1819.  The RC parish for the town of Bennetsbridge., Co. Kilkenny is Danesford, sometimes listed as 'Danesfort & Cuffe's Grange', and coincidently the  Baptism and Marriage records also go back to about 1819, although notes for these registers state that pages have been bound out of order and many are missing. The reference number for this reel is Pos. 5025

(note these films usually contain details of several parishes, so you have to search through to locate the parish of interest)

Do you have any details on Anastasia's parents or siblings ?

  • I tried a search of Co. Kilkenny records on the index of RootsIreland, (pay-website), and there are several Anastasia Jackman baptism listed. The two closest to the estimated year of birth you mentioned are in 1853 and 1857, and both are in Tullaherin RC parish which is immediately east of Danesfort parish.

The parents for the 1857 baptism are matching Thomas and Bridget, and those for the 1853 baptism as Walter and Margaret..

  • Hi Shane,

I am curious.  You mentioned that the Tulla parish film is Pos. 2471

From where (and how) do you access this reel?

I had accessed the parish records for Tulla from the LDS reel 97693

This gave baptisms and marriages from 1819 to 1881 but I also have from that index, reference numbers up to 1905 and was able to extact (by annotation on baptism record) marriages up to 1919.

That search was done in the early 2,000's though

  • Hi Shane,

Thank you for information...yes William Francis was born in County Clare Tulla and I have a birth record of his sister Ellen but she was born in 1864. Anastasia's parents were Thomas and Bridget Jackman and she had a brother Walter who came with her to Perth Western Australia and also a sister Margaret but have hit a brick wall with her.

    Kind regards Nola.

  • Also on the RootsIreland index is a a likely marriage for Thomas & Bridget in 1855 and the same parish as the 1857 baptism I mentioned. Bridget's surname is Phelan. The transcript of the marriage record should include names of witnesses which can help as these are often family, and the record might include a place of residence for the bride and/or groom.

A transcript of the baptism should provide the maiden surname of the mother, and hopefully confirm that marriage is the correct one, and the baptism details would usually include names of godparents, and sometimes the name of the townland the family lived.
