Hi, while researching my family history i discovered that my roots are in Ireland not England, my Great Great Grandfather was Luke Jennings who was born in the Parish of Caltra in Galway in 1780, in 1809 he joined the 13th Regiment of Foot and served untill 1826, his wifes name was Jane but i have no maiden name, they had a son Thomas who was also born in Ireland in 1828, i would love to know who Lukes Parents were and also what was Thomas's date of Birth in 1828, was he also born in Caltra ? Thanking you in anticipation Regards Alan Jennings

Dear Alan
As you can see from the link below, Ahascragh is a Civil Parish in Co. Galway:
Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Caltra begin in 1840 for baptisms and 1866 for marriages. As this is the case there will be no church records available for any baptism or marriage in the parish before this time. I checked www.rootsireland.ie but could not see any marriage record for a Luke Jennings and a Jane. Neither could I see a baptism for any children born to this couple. Most people are very lucky to trace their family back to any point in the 1700s for as you probably know, we are dependent on parish records prior to 1864 and these are often not very compressive or available for early periods.
By 1911 there were 23 Jennings in the District Electoral Division of Ballinasloe. We would have no idea though, which, if any are related to your Jennings family.
Have you already searched ancestry.com message boards and family trees for instances of ?Jennings? or ?Caltra?. Have you been able to find out much from any military records in the National Archives, London?
Best wishes
Clare Doyle
