Hi there,

I am looking for the Fox Family in Clontibret, possibly in the Townland of Croaghan. Michael Fox, born between 1835 and 1841 was my 2nd great grandfather, he migrated to England and married Catherine Bradley whose family were from Co Mayo. According to the census Michael Fox was born in Clontibret. I have a copy of Michael and Catherine's marriage record that details Edward Fox as Michaels father. I have found an 1830 tax record for Edward Fox in Clontibret and other Fox surnames in the area but need more information to link them together.  If you are a Fox or are able to share any Fox information or point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Many many thanks in anticipation.

The 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows an Edward Fox in Croaghan townland. I assume this is the father of Michael. I also looked at the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Note in 1901 the townland was spelled Croughan. There was a Edward Fox family in 1901 in Croaghan and in 1911 there was a Thomas Fox family (not sure where Edward went).

I also looked at Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  They have Clontibret RC baptismal records starting in 1843 (probably too late for Michael). You can work with the indexes to see if there are records you want. I know there are Fox baptismal records in that parish. Roots is a pay site to see the transcription of any church record.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for such a speedy response.  Michael Fox and Catherine Bradley married on 1863, on their marriage certificate the father of Michael reads 'Edward Fox (Deceased)'. So I know that Edward, father of Michael had died by 1863.  There is another Edward Fox of Clontibret born 1836, I think this is possibly eldest son of Edward Fox and brother of Michael.  I think it may be this Edward Fox in the 1901 census.  I will certainly have a look on your suggested sites and see what I can find.  I did have a look at a write up on St Mary's in the parish but it seems that this church was built in the 1840's so had been wondering where any previous baptism/burial records may have been kept.  Is there a cemetary in Clontibret?

Thank you so much, your help is greatly appreciated.  Will let you know how I get on.

    Kindest regards

    Christine

The RC church in Clontibret is St. Marys. I found this site but no Fox markers. I would search further to see if you can find anything.
