    As you probably know McKenna is quite a common name in the county. Hve you already looked at sites like rootsireland.ie (a subscription site) and/or familysearch.org to find out more about your ancestors?

    Do you know what religion they were?

    Roman Catholic, as far as I know.

    My wife is also a descendant of the following, which makes me very curious.

    Samuel McKenna b: abt 1795 Ireland (3 known children)

                   Wife unknown

    Daughter Catherine b: 1821 Ireland

                   1840 moved to PEI - traveled with parents

                    Married  - 1845 -1846 to John Condon 1816

    Son Patrick

                  Married (a) Margaret McCarville in Ireland

                  Married (b) Sarah Conway in PEI

    Daughter unknown

    Have you already used rootsireland.ie or familytsearch.org to find out more about the family? As you probably know given the early search period you refer to, parish records begin at different times depending on the parish. Records for Monaghan RC parish begin in 1835 for baptisms and 1827 for marriages.

    For any marriage or baptism event before that time there will be no parish record. It may be the case that your ancestor was born in a parish and at a time that predates parish records or may have been born in another parish in Co. Monaghan. Have a look at the sites listed above and let us know if you learn anything new.

    There is a John McKenna mentioned here in 1796:
