Does anyone know where toureenohig was in Brosna or what it is now called today? I think one of my ancestors James Keane lived there. He had a son named Adam who married a Elizabeth Leane. How about toureenacrig? Does anyone know where that was and what it is called today. Also does anyone know what these names mean in gaelic. If anyone can help me with that I would greatly appreciate. Thanks.

  • Brosna is a town, located in Brosna West townland, and also part of Brosna civi parish... so I checked for townland names in Brosna RC parish, which covered three civil parishes, that might fit your clues - i.e. either could look or sound similar. A couple come quite close :

    Tooreenard, Castleisland civil parish
    Tooreengarriv, Castleisland civil parish
    Tooreenmore, Castleisland civil parish

    Tooreenagowan, Ballincuslane civil parish
    Tooreennascarty, Ballincuslane civil parish

    Tooreennablauha, Brosna civil parish

Do you have a date for the Keane / Leane marriage ?
Dont know if you already checked this... most the pre-1900 parish records fpr Co. Kerry are availabale free on the IrishGenealogy website.

Townland names are much the same as they were back to the 1830s, but there can be some variation in spelling.

  • I have done a lot of research there, in Brosna, & found most of my information, the civil registration was Tralee.  And, I guess because of the location of my ancestors, I found nothing at Castleisland.  So that must be a place to look, as well. (I realize this post is old and you probably know that by now.)

RE: the names and spellings changing; an example I found looking at Griffiths land records; I was looking for a tiny townland called Scalp, or Scalip on the records, and they had recorded Knocknadarive, or Knocknadariv, all kinds of spellings.  It turns out it was called Knuckaderra, (in Kerrry back in the day,) at one time spelled Cnoc na d-tarb, (hill of the bullls,) and later spelled Knocnadarrive or Bulls Hill.  It was situated in the N. end of the Parish and bounded N by the Parish of "Brusna" W. by the twolands of Lyre, Toreenagour & Lackfoodther; E by Raycoshala & S by Lackabaun & Ballynard.  The land evaluations described the area and give you a really good idea of what it was like back then, and a "feel," for it.  Anyway, the Scalp place I was looking for turned out to be an abreviation for Scalpmore, but in this tiny towland was Scalpbeg also, and Tooreenflugh.

They have so many Knocky names, distant from each other, it's crazy, and one could easily mistake one for another.  Very complicated.

If nothing is found at Castleisland, I would recommend checking Tralee (for Brosna.)  ON the land evaluation site you can look up the place (truly FREE,) and you should be able to find the Parish.

There's also a great site called Margarets Pages, (shes a Curtain Clan person,) who has a lot of information about Brosna, still has family there, and responsive to email as well.  Another site on the internet I found, just type in Brosna, Kerry and genealogy and it's a wealth of information about researching in Kerry on all levels.

BTW, feel free to enlighten or correct me if you find I have misquoted something in error, I will not take it personally!

    Take care now!
