Hello,

Last year I attended the Irish Genealogy Conference in Dublin and a few people were talking about Landlord/tenant Books and records from the 1800's. I don't remember the details but I believe all Landlords (or at least many) surrendered their tenant records to the government/Dublin many years ago and they are open to the public to view.

Does anyone know about this? And if so, do you know where they are located and if they are really open to the public?

Thanks in advance.

  • There?s the Griffiths revaluation records which take forward the Primary Valuation from the period 1848 ? 1864, up until the 1920s. These are in the Valuation office in Dublin, and show tenants and their immediate superior landlord. They are open to the public. (The records for what is now Northern Ireland, are on-line on the PRONI  site). The revaluation records show when a tenant arrived and left a given property, and other related information. However it?s not for every property in Ireland, just those of a size or value to merit inclusion in Griffiths.

Some major landlords deposited their estate records in the Public Record Office in Dublin prior to 1922 but these were generally lost in the 1922 fire. There have been subsequently deposits in the National Archives in Dublin. You can see what they hold in their on-line catalogue. However many landlords records are either still held by the families or, more commonly, have just been lost so there?s no comprehensive set of records for the whole country.
