Greetings:

I am looking for assistance finding records concerning:

William Major and Elizabeth Mcclure.

William and Elizabeth were married in Clontibret, Mon., Ireland on about 13 APRIL 1858.  By 1860 they had moved to Kilwinning, County Ayr, Scotland, where they had four children, James (born 11 Dec 1860), Jane (born 27 Apr 1863), William (born 16 Apr 1865) and Elizabeth (died 6 Feb 1873).

William's father  was Thomas Major.  Elizabeth's father was Frank Mcclure.

I request any information, parish records, etc., available for either the Major family or the Mcclure family.

Thank you for your assistance.

  • The marriage is listed in the civil BMD Index, so non-Catholic, as follows :

    Name : William Major
    Event Type : Marriage
    Registration Year : 1858
    Registration District : Monaghan
    Volume 8 / Page 169

one of the names with the same references is an Elizabeth Mcclure. You can use the above references to order a research cert from the GRO costing €4, which will provide a few additional details to help your search - e.g. name and denomination of the church, or name of registry office, occupations for the groom & fathers, residences for the bride and groom, names of witnesses and the name of the minister or registrar. see this link to download the order form.

There doesn't seem to by anyone on Griffith's Valuation with the surname Major listed in Co. Monaghan, and all the results I get for people named Thomas Major are for Antrim or Londonderry. There are McClure results for Co. Monaghan, but no Frank, although he may have been deceased by the time of the marriage. Have you located the family on the Scottish census returns, if so what do William and Elizabeth give as their places of birth ?

Edit : the extracted version of the civil marriage record is on FamilySearch here  These give some of the detail from the register, but dont include the items I mentioned above. The location on these extracted records is often the name of a registration sub-district.

There were Mcclures in monaghan in 1901, but no MAJORs.

Maybe he was from another county nearby ??

My grandfather and his father were from Fermanagh, but both married girls from Monaghan...

Clontibret seems to border with Armagh...
