I'm reearching my Farrell family geneaology. I am looking for the marriage of Charles Mulvey and Bridget Farrell b. 1844 to George and Bridget Higgins Farrell in townland of Lisadaly, Croghan, Roscommon. She married Charles Mulvey c. 1868, had three children, Bridget, John and Margaret in Ireland and by c. 1872/3 the family moved to Tamworth, Staffordshire, England. I have contacted the descendants in Staffs but they have little info about Bridget's origins other than Lisadaly, Croghan, Roscommon.
I have scoured all websites and have not been able to find the marriage. Are there gaps in the Killukin records??? I would suspect yes.
Any help or direction would be much appreciated in finding info about my great grandmother's elder sister.
Thank you.

The marriage record should be included in Civil records if it took place from 1864 onwards, but before that you would have to search church records.
Do you have dates and places of birth for Charles and Bridget's children ?
Knowing when and where these took place should help narrow down the search...Shane Wilson, IrelandXO Volunteer ☘

Found an extracted civil birth and a baptism for one of the children on FamilySearch - a Bridget Mulvey born to Charles and Bridget on the 20th January 1872, and registered in Ballinameen sub-district, Co. Roscomnmon. The baptism took place on the 3rd February in 'Killucan and Killumond' Catholic parish. Parents first names are noted in Latin, so Carolus and Bridgida.
see : this link (FamilySearch website, note : the first two results are the civil record extracts, the next two the baptism, both duplicated)
Note there are two separate civil parishes named Killukin in Co. Roscommon, the one referred to in that baptism is sometimes listed as Killukin (Boyle). Croghan is an alternate name for the Catholic parish of 'Killukin and Killummod' as the main chapel was located there, and it seems it has marriage records going back to about 1825. There are a few small gaps noted for these records, although none for the late 1860s. There could be additional missing pages not noted, or illegible portions of the registers..
The BMD Index to civil records has a reference to Bridget's birth registration listed under Boyle registration district, of which Ballinameen sub-district is part.
Name : Bridget Mulvy
Event Type : Birth
Registration Year : 1872
Registration District : Boyle
Volume 4 / Page 101I'm not seeing any likely Charles Mulvey/Mulvy marriages on the BMD Index in the area or anywhere nearby, it's possible they didn't marry, or the marriage was not registered in civil records...
p.s. it looks like Margaret was baptised in 1876 in Co. Roscommon, and her birth registered in Boyle district, so if they appear in Staffordshire in 1872/73 then maybe they travelled back and forth ?

There are 2 civil parishes in Co. Roscommon called "Killukin". You have joined the wrong parish!
Lisdaly townland belongs to the parish of Killukin (Boyle). The RC Parish records you need to search under are Croghan aka Killukin aka Killukin-Killummod aka Ballinameen aka Aughrim (and for post 1865 BMDs they registered under BOYLE or CARRICK-ON-SHANNON).
So the Ballinameen / Boyle result above is a very good lead for this couple. Absolutley Lisdaly territory.
As for the Farrell history in Lisdaly...
1749 Elphin Census recorded a Garrett & Rose Farrell (RC) Cottiers there. Most likely, taking you 2 generations back! That no Farrell or Mulvey were listed on the Tithe Applotment records here in 1842 does not mean they were not residing there. They may have been part of a group / family holding.
Other relatives you can follow up on:
On Lisdaly's eastern boundary, in Ballinvilla, Martin Farrell & Cath Dowd of Ballinvilla were baptising a child in 1889 (again, they had no land-holding here, probably cottagers).
However, I think your people may have hailed from Drumerr (two townlands, east of Lisdaly) as both Mulveys and Farrells lived there for a long time:
1842 [Tithe Applotments] see Ml. Farrell who had 9 Irish acres (subject to tithes, most of Drumer was bog and did not qualify).
1857 [Griffiths Valuation] See Pat Farrell at farm 4a Drumerr.
1865 CRO Pat Farrell & Mary McGarry; also Peter Mulvey (labourer) & Catherine Beirne
1902 Pat Farrell & Margaret Harrington
You also have a cluster of Farrells appearing on Tithe Records of 1835 in Ardlavagh (Drumerr's northern boundary) and Legvoy aka Gardenstown (adjascent). You can be sure they all stem from the same ancestor originally. Ardlavagh & Legvoy were Farrell AND Mulvey strongholds. So, I'd recommend you dig deep in both of those townlands if you wish to extend your tree further. Overall, there wasn't an abundance of Farrells in the parish so you should be able to pin it down without too much confusion.

Hi Rua,
Thank you for your reply. You're correct...I should have been registered with the Killukin/Boyle link. Since my post of ages ago, I have found a lot of info as to the origins of my Farrell's most especially those of Ardlavagh, Legvoy and the area. I have also found those still living in Cashel and have been in contact with them. The family hailed from Kiltoghert, Leitrim back in the day and had been evicted and came "across the bridge" at Kiltoghert into Roscommon and settled there. I recognize some of the surnames i.e. Dowd and also the McDermott name plays a part. The Mulvey name is strong as well as the Kielty name.
Regarding the marriage of Charles Mulvey and Bridget Farrell, it's never been found and from others to whom I've spoken, the priest never recorded the marriage and the couple never reported it to the civil authorities. They had 3 children in Roscommon and then headed for Tamworth, Staffordshire where descendants are still living and with whom I've been in touch. There are also those in Cheshire who vacation in at Cashel every summer, residing at the old Farrell homestead called Shroankeerah. Anyway...thank you again for your reply...I appreciate the follow-up.

Fascinating!
Can you tell me... what is your understanding of where "Cashel" is in Killukin? Does it cover more than one townland? (I thought it was Carroward townland).
Thanks

Hi Rua,
Cashel is within the bounds of Carrick-on-Shannon, Roscommon. George Farrell, my 2x great grandfather, died c. 1872 but his death went unreported as well. He was born c. 1805 and I am quite certain that he was from Leitrim as well. Many of my Farrell's are buried in the cemetery at Ardcarne old and new. The later generations are buried at Drumlion Cemetery. The family seems to have "daughtered-ou" as they say with Egan's now figuring in and Keenehan's too.

Thanks.
Could you name what townlands fall within Cashel? Shroankeeragh, Carroward...
There's another similar occurence turnimng up on Parish records under "Boher' which covers a few townlands on the road leading into Croghan from Carrick.
Terribly confusing, as they are not mapped.

Hi Rua,
I'm not sure of other sub-townlands however, Carroward is another place where my Farrell's lived, namely, Patrick and Ellen Mulvey Farrell. They had a son, George, a twin, who emigrated to NJ in the early 1900's and was killed by a train while working, in 1906. They had several children, Bridget, Martin and Michael among them. I believe Michael was the other twin ( Iam going on memory now). It is one of his daughter's who married into the Egan family who still reside at Cashel. She is since dead in the year 2005 or 06, I believe. Patrick Farrell was my great grandmother, Winifred's brother.
Best,

Upodate: how to locate Cashel village (Carrick-on-Shannon) here.

Hi Rua,
The townland of Sroancaoraigh is recognizable to me now. I've located a relative, who lives in Cheshire, England. He has inherited the house and lands there from John Farrell, who was his great grand uncle. John died c. 2012 in his late 90's. The place is a work in progress as to renovations and introducing modern improvements etc. I hope to visit at some point. Thank you for your help as always.
All the Best,
