Looking for information on Thomas, Stephen and Edward Cassidy of Upper Gortgall.  See information on wikitree http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cassidy-450.  Thomas is my great great grandfather.

I am interested to know if any records for them exist in RC church records.  Trying to:-

1.  Confirm baptism date and first marriage of Thomas Cassidy, son of Stephen and Unknown (possibly Catherine or Kitty) Britton. Married before 1830 and had two children prior to transportation to Australia;

2. Find marriage record of Stephen Cassidy and Unknown Britton, believed to have been married as RC but her family were Church of Ireland;

3. Stephen was imprisioned for 2 years, not transported in 1830.  Where did he go?  Any ideas for a death record?

4.  Thomas' brother Edward escaped from Australia, but was recaptured in Ireland in 1849 using the name Cissero CASSEDO and imprisioned.  Again, where was he sent?  What happened to him?

Any help appreciated.

  • Veronica,

    Gortgall is in the civil parish of Boho but the RC parish of Inismacsaint. Unfortunately they have no baptism or marriage records earlier than 1847. So you won?t find Stephen?s marriage nor their 2 sons baptisms. You might however find Thos Cassidy?s first marriage if after 1847. The records don?t appear to be on-line anywhere. There are copies in the National Library in Dublin and in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. But a personal visit is usually required to inspect them.

    Statutory death registration didn?t start in Ireland till 1864 so if Stephen died before that there won?t be a record. The RC church generally didn?t keep burial records, so that doesn?t help either. If he died before 1864 and doesn?t have a gravestone (which was the case for a large percentage of the population), then there may be no record of his death at all.

    Searching the statutory death records for Enniskillen civil registration area (which includes Boho) from 1864 to 1901 produces just one Stephen Cassidy death. He died on 25.9.1894 and was estimated to be born 1806. That fits quite well. You can view that death cert on-line for ?2 on the GRONI site. Use the search registrations option. https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

    Findmypast and Ancestry both have some Irish criminal records on. Have you searched them for Stephen & Edward?

  • Thanks for the quick reply Elwyn.  I thought that records would be scant.  Thomas married before 1830.  The convict indents say he was married with two daughters. I found a marriage record in Dublin to a Rose Wheeler that fits in the time span, but is quite speculative.  There is a Rose Cassidy in the Griffiths valuation living at Kinawley which is quite close and near other Cassidys.  I have found on the Fermanagh Gold site that this Rose has two children, but I'm not sure of their ages, so it is a possibilty but by no means certain.

    The death record you speak about is possibly Stephens son, his age seems to fit with naming conventions of possibly being the third son.  I have been contemplating ordering the certificate, thanks for the tip on viewing on line, didn't realise that.

    I think Stephen snr would have been bore between 1760-1780.  They say he wasnt transported due to his advanced years, which seems odd to me.  Thomas was born around 1800, so even if he was 40 when Thomas was born he would have only been 70 in 1830.  I've seen convicts that old, so am a bit surpised by this.  If he was abt 90 in 1830 then that would make him born abt 1740!

  • PS I have checked ancestry and FMP for criminal records to no avail.  I have now looked at Stephens death certificate, thanks again for pointing me in this direction.  Only new info is that he had a son Edward.  This is a family name so it still seems a likely candidate for another son of Stephen snr.
