Hi there,
My name is Scott Sherman, I am the decendant of George William Powell born around 1786 in Ireland and Margaret Murray born around 1793 also born in Ireland. Thier first daughter Margaret was born in Ireland in 1821, and their second child William was born in Quebec Canada (St. Ferdinand deHalifax) in 1823. Their other children are: Ann-1823, John-1828, Denis-1830, Mary-1833, and my ancestor Corneilus (Neil) in 1835. Although George Powell sounds Protestant, they were Catholic, or at least attended a Catholic church in Quebec. George died in Canada in 1862 and Margaret also died in Canada in 1859. Neil moved to Minnesota USA in the early 1870's and died there in 1895.
I am not positive that they are from County Clare, but that was the indication of where to look first. Any information that you can help me with would be very appreciated. I would love to find out more about my family roots in Ireland.
Thanks,
Scott

Dear Scott:
Many thanks for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. Have you tried the Clare Library Website? They have a lot of great online resources that may help you to narrow down your search.
Their website link is: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Jane.

So I used the map from the county clare library (although the link isn't working for me right now) I made a map of surname Powell locations along with Murray locations from 1820's in County Clare, and came up with two areas where they overlap. I'm not sure how close people actually lived to each other to get married, or if this makes sense, but it seems like a good place to start.
Thanks,

Dear Scott:
I saw your response together with the map areas. There were a lot of Powells in the Tulla area, however none of those families appear to match with yours. In addition, there were Murrays/Murrys in the Feakle/Kilkeedy area.
I think that you will need to try more information from your side first before you can make a definite connection. Powell is not a Clare name as such, but they came from Ulster and settled in the area. Interestingly enough, the name of Cornelius Powell figured in a number of the Powells families in Tulla in the 1820s. You might keep this in mind.
I have looked for a birth date for Margaret between 1820 - 1822 for you with parents of George William Powell and Margaret Murray, but have not come up with anything.
If you have further information that you want to give me, please email me at: tulla@irelandxo.com.
Kind regards,
Jane.
