I am writing as I have a Church Baptism Record for Martin Kenny, New Ballynalty, Shrule RC Parish. The date of Baptism is August 8, 1934.  (I believe this to be my third great grandfather.)

The father list is Martin Kenny and the mother Bridget Hare.  Would you have any additional information on them or their family?  Or suggestions as to where I might look.  I'm fairly new to this so I may be able to provide a little additional information.  Thanks.

I checked Roots Ireland indexes. Shrule RC records start in 1831. I found two other baptismal records  for children of Martin Kenny and a wife named Bridget. There was an 1832 record for a Catherine and an 1840 record for a Mary. I could not find the marriage record. The marriage record was likely before 1831.

I also looked at the 1825 Tithe Applotment listings for Shrule parish. There was a Martin Kenny entry for Stradnagh. Stradnagh is not a current townland in Shrule.

I looked at the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Shrule parish. There was no Martin or Bridget Kenny listed. Did they emigrate before 1856?

  • Roger,

Thank you.  You have indeed found two other baptismal records that I believe are part of the same Kenny family.  There are two other daughters as well Ellen and Bridget, baptized in 1837 and 1843 respectively.  I will look further for the Martin Kenny entry for Stradnagh.

(Mary Kenny is one of the witnesses on the Roots Web Marriage record of her brother Martin and Mary (nee Adams) Kenny in November 1857.)  Neither Martin nor Mary emigrated.  However, their son, my great grandfather did emigrate to the US.

Regarding Martin Kenny and Bridget Hare.  (I believe Hare is her maiden name).  To the best of my knowledge, neither Martin or Bridget ever emigated.  From the little research I have done to date, I believe they both died before 1856 likely because of the famine.  I know nothing more about Ellen and Bridget either.

    Thank you.

    Brenda
