Moore Family in Kilkenny & Reevanagh

The 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Kilkenny lists nine Michael Moore entries including one in Reevanagh townland in Tiscoffin civil parish which appears to be the same place that Margaret was living in 1856. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kilkenny/tiscoffin.php

There are two Catholic parishes in the area: Clara and Gowran. I searched the Roots Ireland indexes. I found the 1834 baptismal record for William parents Michael and Margaret and the baptism was in St. John's church in Kilkenny Town. I could not find a baptismal record for Mary around 1833 with the same parents.

I also found some other baptismal records in the Gowran RC church for five children of a Michael and Margaret Moore. Possibly this is a different family.

William Moore: Noting that in his Immigration Muster William Moore stated his home town to be Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny, I think your Baptism discovery at St John's Church Kilkenny Town is a strong match.

Q1:  Is the Parish Parish Clara or Gowran please? ( assume Gowran as your possible family baptisms are there?)

Q2: Is St John Church still standing? 

Mary Moore: I calculated her both year from her immigration muster in 1855 stating she was 22. 

Her Place of Origin given in her Immigration Record is In Co. Kilkenny, but the parish / town is hard to decipher, it looks to be an abbreviation possibly ...either Pilt. or Pell.

Mary's Immigration record, maybe your familiarity with place names there may allow you to decipher it?

POSSIBLE FAMILY: Looks possible will examine further. Michael & Ellen name continues in children so a positive indicator.

Hi my name is bridget moore I believe philip moore born 1836 and Margaret moore (maher)had 8 children he was my great great grandfather one of his children was Micheal moore ..born 1874 ....died 1960 I think . I am engaged in a long and torturous attempt to track down a grandfather, Thomas J Moore, who is now long passed on and for whom I have little information.

What little I do know is that as a child in the 1950s, or perhaps the early 1960s, that I as taken to New York, where he lived, and that I said goodbye to my grandfather.  I was told that he was returning to Ireland to be with his brother and that's the last time I ever saw him.  I think that his brother lived in Kilkenny, but this all happened a very long time ago and memories do fade over time.

I know that he was born in Ireland and that he returned there, so attached death certificate may be his.  Or, may not be, there are a lot of Moores in Ireland.  It states that on 15 November 1966 a Thomas Moore, age 87, passed to his maker in Kilmoganny.  In this record he is entry 96, in Column 3.  It lists what I think was Mr. Moore's residence, said to be Moorefield, Kilmoganny, Kilkenny.  This raised an interesting question, since there is now a charity called Moorefield House in Kilmoganny.  However, as you have only been there since 1978 the question became, was there once a home called Moorefield on the site?  Perhaps a private home that was renovated or even razed so that the existing structure could be built?

Mr. Moore immigrated to the United States and attached is what I think is a record of him, his wife and a child Francis, who I think is the same person as my aunt.  Or, may not be, there are a lot of Moores in America, too.

That's about all that I know.  Both his children Francis and Eileen (my mother) are long deceased and Francis had no children.  Essentially, there are none who would be able to fill in the blanks and I am indebted for any information that anyone can provide.

I must share with you that your post was most interesting and gave me some ideas about how to further search for my grandfather.  That task is made very onerous because of the very limited amount of information I have at hand. His wife, Anna, and children, Eileen, my mother and her sister, Francis, all passed on by the time I was 18, as did Thomas Moore.  Effectively the story tellers, those who could tell the family history, were gone before I had a care about family matters.  I am sure that at 17 years of age much the same was the case for you and almost everyone else just starting out in life's journey as adults with all the pressing things we have to do as young adults such as having fun, relationships and so on. 

In any case, I would love to hear any ideas you might have on Thomas and the branch of the extended family that we might share.  I say "might share" because the lack of knowledge on my part makes Thomas in Kilkenny only tentative at this point.  A mere possibility.  I was but a child when my grandfather left the states to return to Ireland.  Probably no older than 10.  In all the years that have passed three things have stuck in my mind regarding Thomas, but I've no context or substance to them and memories many decades in the past can be utterly wrong.  The first thing I recall is being told that he was going back to Ireland to be with his brother.  I am sure that they told me the brothers name, but that bit is long lost.  The next thing was that his brother was in Kilkenny.  And, lastly, I remember that he was called TJ.  I do not know what the J stood for.

That's very scarce information to use in tracking someone named Moore in a country (yours and mine) full of people named Moore.  As well, and as stated, I was young when all this occurred, so my recollection of Kilkeeny being the place he was going, while strongly held, could be absolutely wrong.
