I am looking for the McCleary family line. They were farmers in or around Oldcastle. Most of them went to America in the 1860's and one side to Wrexham in North Wales .

I do have a lot of information ,but not where they lived ,or if others still remain . They were Catholics

I looked at the Griffiths Valuation and could not come up with McClearys or Clearys near Oldcastle. I went further back to the 1825 Tithe Applotment lisitngs

There were two Cleary entries in Kilbride civil parish which is a small parish just to the west of Oldcastle parish. They lived in Cloncollog. There is no current Cloncollog townland so you may need to do some research on the currrent location within Kilbride parish.

I don't know if there is a connection to your family but this is a possible lead on where they lived.

  • Thabk you for getting back to me.

I have been going through some of the records I have and one says that one family are shown as of 'Braymount , Summerhill Parish but the rest just say Oldcastle . Most seem to have left Ireland by the late 1870's.

  • This is my family too.  I think we have corresponded before.  My g-g-grandfather was James McCleary who married Mary McCleary in Oldcastle 1832.  Today I learned there was a DNA connection between me and one Alice McLeary who married Edward Roe (McEnroe) 1832 in Oldcastle.  So Alice is probably a sibling of my James.  This is the first time I've found an Irish connection by DNA alone.

I'd love to hear from anyone else researching McCleary of Oldcastle, Meath or Wrexham, Wales, or Monmouth, Illinois.

  • Hello, I have only just discovered this site and in particular I am interested in the McCleary family from Oldcastle. My GGGrandfather was John McCleary who I think married a Catherine Murther. He was born in 1824 and had three sons Anthony, Christopher and James. They were Catholics and I know Christopher and Anthony both came to England and Christopher was married in 1868 in Chester. I think Anthony lived in North Wales. John McCleary's father was called James and I think he married a lady called Rose Gerard or Gerald in Oldcastle in 1821. I would love to know if anyone has any further information on this family that they could share. Thanks, John Lindop

  • Dear John:

Many thanks for your post to the message board and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You might consider creating an Ancestor Profile with the information that you have shared above.  These profiles are read by all our members, updated weekly and often lead to family members collaborating and sharing further information,.  The link to create an Ancestor Profile is:  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

In the meantime, I will pass on your query to several of our Meath volunteers who may be able to add further information to your research.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hello John.  Here's what I found about this family in the Oldcastle parish records.

John McCleary married Catherine Murtha 27 Jan 1839.  Their 3 sons were born as follows:

    Anthony 12 Dec 1839

    Christopher 3 Apr 1842

    James 10 Jun 1845

I don't know about a connection between the above family with that of James McCleary and Rose Fitzgerald, but here are their dates:

James McCleary married Rose Fitzgerald 10 Jan 1821.  There children were as follows:

    Bridget 10 Dec 1821

    John 22 Feb 1824

    Mary 30 Jul 1826

I don't know if the John who was born 1824 is the same as the John who married Catherine Murtha in 1839 are the same person (he would be not quite 15 years old), but such an early marriage is certainly possible in that time and place.

These are 2 of the 12 families of McClearys that I extracted from the Oldcastle records.  Presumably they all connect in some ways that I haven't found.  If I can unite the family of James-and-Rose with that of John-and-Catherine, then my database will make a lot more sense.

I'd appreciate any new data or sources about this family.

Jim & I White, thanks for the replies. I agree about the age of John and his subsequent marriage. I have tried to upload what I believe to be John's baptism entry which seems to show that his parents were James and Rose. If you don't have this I hope it helps with your records.
