I think my gggrandmother's surname was Luigg but I can find no such name in lists of surnames, nor in genealogy searches. The name does seem to exist as a more recent ancestor's death was reported by his niece Helen Luigg. Has anyone come across this or a similar name?

There?s no-one of the name Luigg in Griffiths Valuation (1848 ? 1864) nor in the 1901 & 1911 censuses, nor in the statutory record of Irish births, deaths & marriages (1845 ? 1958). So it?s fairly safe to say it?s not a name commonly found in Ireland.
I also checked the 1901 Scottish census. None there. The 1901 English census has a single example of the name, for a lady born in Austria. So not a name normally found in the UK or Ireland. Perhaps Austrian or German? Or it has been mis-spelled?

Thank you Elwyn. I'll try the Austrian line of enquiry.
