A year after I visited Ireland and saw the stone circle in Kenmare, I found the death certificate for my gr,gr, grandfather, James Sullivan, born 5 May, 1827. His birthplace was listed as Kenmare and his parents were Peter Sullivan and Mary Donelly. He entered the US by land (probably from Canada) in 1846 and settled in Whitneyville, Maine (near Machias). (Another Kerryman, Cornelius Sullivan, contributed greatly to the town's growth.) I found what may be a sibling, Catherine Sullivan, listed in irishgenealogy.ie and born 1822. Sponsors for her baptism were Joan Donnelly and Dermot Sullivan. Peter Sullivan and Mary Donnelly were listed as sponsors for several baptisms and Jeremiah Sullivan may have been a sibling of Peter. Droumnevane was listed as an address for Jeremiah.
James became an American citizen in 1854. His surviving children were Peter Sullivan, who moved to Washington State, and Mary Ellen Sullivan, who married Lawrence Redmond. My Mother had his wife listed as Catherine O'Neal but US Census records show her first name as Bridget.
I would like to find any information available about the family, about "Droumnevane" and if there are any related families still in the area or who are tracing family records.
My Thanks for any assistance.

Hi James
Hopefully some Sullivan family researchers from Kenmare will be in touch with you.
PRONI have an interesting archival list of the Kenmare Paper that will give a good overview of the estate - much of estate life would have had an impact on the wider community - trade, employment and general business and farming. You can see them here:

I will be in Ireland in May, 2016. Would there be any contacts in Kenmare I could check with? Any sites in Kenmare that have records I can search?
Thank You

Hi Mary Lou
It might be a good idea to have a look at the Kerry Local Studies Library and you can call in too on your travels:
