Hi,

I'm trying to trace my GGGgrandfather, Samuel Smith who went to Dumbarton, Scotland sometime before 1819, when I have a baptism record of his first child Helen there.. He was born around 1789, and there is a good possibilty he came from Co. Cavan, possibly Crosserlough, maybe Kiffagh townland. All his children in Scotland were baptised in the Catholic church, although he himself may have originally been baptised in the C of I. Other family names carried through are James, George, and Richard.

I have a record of military sign up papers in Dublin dated 1805 for a Samuel Smith age 17 born "Chrisloch, Cavan", which I suspect may be phonetic at the time for Crosserlough.

His wife was Margret (sic) Duffy, born Ireland cc1801. They may have met in Scotland, as I can find no record of this name in that part of Cavan. If this strikes a chord with any other member I would be grateful for any info you have.
