I am looking for any information you may have for a Myles Mcandrew husband of Mary Devaney and their family. circa: 1800?
I found a record for my 3rd great grandfather James Mcandrew who was baptized on Oct. 20, 1831 from "the registry of Baptisms - Parish of Kilmore Moy, Counties of Mayo and Sligo".
It lists his paretns as Miles Mcandrew and Mary Devany (devaney) and residence of Gate???? Sponsors were Thomas Corcoran and Rose? Corcoran.

Mary:
I looked on Roots Ireland and they transcribed the address as Gate St. presumably in Ballina. I also found an 1834 baptismal record for a Mary with parents Miles and Mary. They were living in Ardnaree which is a little north of Ballina.

Roger,
Thank you for your quick response. I did find the baptismal record for Mary. But I am unable to make out the residence? Miles and Mary Devany are listed on both records but then there is no records for either?
Could Miles be translated into another given name?
I tried looking at the records on mayo.roots.... but they are asking me to buy a subscription to view the records.

Sorry for my ignorance. I'm not sure what I should be looking for in these records?

Hi Mary,
The TIthe records were taken from about 1815 - 1842, where households were charged a tax to pay for the Church of Ireland - even Catholics had to pay this tax. Griffiths Valuation was a survey of heads of households taken from 1848 - 1864 (or so), and recorded the head of household, where they lived, how much land they had, what rent the paid etc.
Both records are often used as census substitues, they didn't cover all households, and didn't list all household members. When I haven't found all of the records for my ancestors, I've tried to create a file, listing all potential family (or people with the same surname) as sometimes you can find a father, uncle or brother listed and that helps fill out details on your tree.
This site has the full Griffiths Valuation, so you can see the actual pages. Here's all of the McAndrews that lived in Kilmoremoy on Griffiths Valuation, which was taken 1856 for Kilmoremoy.

Let me know if you want me to clarify anything.

Now I understand. I know they lived in or around that area in the mid 1830 since that is where both of their children were baptized. But, like you said, not everyone was accounted for and this could be the end of my journey.
I so appreciate all your help!

Mary,
I have had luck by going sideways - if you can happen to find Myles' siblings, you might be able to find parents that way. I don't have Ancestry.com access at the moment, but I was able to find 2 more generations in Kilmoremoy this way - there are death registers for Kilmoremoy parish and by piecing together some info, I made the linkages. If you find baptismal records for other McAndrew families in the area, pay attention to who were the sponsors for the child, quite often they were relatives.

John,
That is a great idea. I was also thinking about contacting the church where they were baptized. Hopefully, they would have more information about my family.
Again,thank you!
